Calypte Announces Completion and Preliminary Results of Registration Trials in China
PLEASANTON, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Calypte Biomedical Corporation (Amex: HIV) today announced that it has completed the clinical trails related to the registration of its HIV-1/2 rapid urine, oral and blood tests and the serum and urine Western Blot supplemental tests in the People's Republic of China ("China").

A preliminary report has been completed on the performance of the Calypte Rapid Oral and Urine tests. In the preliminary report, concordance of the Calypte rapid oral test with the reference ELISA test was 99.9% and 99.5% for the urine test. Calypte is still awaiting a report of the results of its rapid HIV-1/2 blood test and the urine and serum Western Blot tests and expects them to be issued in the current quarter.

The trial included approximately 1,500 subjects and was conducted by the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention of the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the "Chinese CDC") at sites in four provinces and involved the testing of approximately 250 HIV antibody positive subjects, 1,100 HIV antibody negative subjects and approximately 150 subjects with potentially interfering conditions.

Dr. Richard George, President and Chief Executive Officer said, "We are pleased with the performance of our urine and oral fluid rapid trials. These results are consistent with previous clinical trials of our rapid products and further validate Calypte's technology in another clinical trial setting. These results form the basis for seeking approval of our diagnostic tests and we have begun to prepare the required regulatory applications for filing with the Chinese FDA ("SFDA")."

"The data generated by the Chinese CDC will be provided to the SFDA in support of our applications to register the products. We expect to receive the final report and plan to submit the complete packages to the SFDA during the current quarter. We expect the SFDA to process and turnaround our applications in a reasonable period of time and the Company will do everything in its power to stay in close contact with the agency, and respond in a timely manner to any questions that may arise. We continue to expect a launch in China during the second half of this year," concluded Dr. George.

There are a reported 840,000 adults and children in China living with HIV/AIDS today, and according to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, China is one of the "next wave" countries where the number of infections is expected to grow to 15 million by 2010. China has recognized this problem and acknowledged its testing gap. The annual AIDS testing level is currently estimated at 1.5% of the population. The Chinese government has recently announced its commitment to offer voluntary HIV testing to its entire 1.36 billion-population. Calypte believes that the only effective way to manage such numbers is to utilize trained non-professionals to administer a program based on safe, alternative fluid -- oral fluid or urine -- testing. There are other focused, and large markets within China where testing is mandated, such as population control, prisons and immigration.
