Ellie Thorpe, a director at Kantar, says: “This list isn’t the strongest banks or the most valuable banks but rather the ones with the potential to create value in the future based on the strength of customer perceptions.”

Indeed, a quick look through the table throws up some surprise names, while a significant number of the sector’s biggest banks, the likes of Barclays, HSBC and JPMorgan, are missing.

Thorpe says of those largest names not in the list: “They’re probably stronger right now but they don’t have as much momentum. They’re winning today but their chances of winning tomorrow are lower.
“What we often see with big players is that they come to mind for customers very quickly but they’re not seen as doing things differently or meeting people’s needs on a deeper level.”

Many of the big UK and US names, she adds, rely heavily on their fame and established global infrastructure, but “that alone doesn’t sustain long-term growth”.

Rakuten Rakuma Launches AI-Powered Product Listing Support

- New AI feature generates product descriptions based on images, significantly reducing merchant workloads

Tokyo, October 9, 2025 - Rakuten Group, Inc. today announced the launch of an in-house developed AI-powered product listing support feature for Rakuten Rakuma, its community-powered marketplace app.

The feature utilizes AI to analyze images uploaded by users listing products and automatically recommends highly relevant categories, product names and product descriptions. It links with tens of millions of product data points from across the Rakuten Group to help users efficiently input accurate information.

In addition, the feature also leverages part of the data from Komehyo, a Rakuma Saikyo Kantei* authentication service partner, with annual distribution of 2.4 million second-hand brand products. This supports product information recommendations from over 100 luxury brands, in addition to Rakuten's existing product data. With the new feature, users can significantly reduce the time and effort spent and list products more efficiently and accurately.

Listing products on second-hand apps requires entering a significant amount of information, such as product names and product descriptions. Users identified this issue as a key challenge, which Rakuten Rakuma addressed by developing its own AI-powered listing support feature.

Going forward, Rakuten Rakuma is committed to realizing an innovative e-commerce platform that delivers unparalleled convenience and value, for both consumers and business customers alike.

About Rakuten Rakuma
Launched in February 2018, Rakuten Rakuma was created when Fril, the first consumer commerce app in Japan which launched in July 2012, merged with the Rakuten Group-operated service Rakuma. By expanding the circular economy where products are passed on rather than thrown away and creating a world of e-commerce that is easy for everyone to use, Rakuten Rakuma intends to drive the growth of the circulation market and contribute to the creation of a circular society.

Clintonchogo Kavai, Cloud Automation Lead

10.10.25 21:28
We Are Symphony: A conversation with Clinton Kavai

By Rajalakshmy Rajeev Project Specialist - Communications, Rakuten Symphony Deutschland
October 8, 2025

We caught up with Clintonchogo Kavai, Cloud Automation Lead, whose fascination with "why things work" led him to redefine mobile networks at Rakuten Symphony Deutschland.
Tell us about your journey to Rakuten Symphony.

Before I ever wrote a single line of production code, I was dismantling radios in Diani, Kenya. Not because they were broken, but because I needed to know why they worked. That same curiosity has guided me since. So, when Rakuten reached out in my final year of university, sharing their vision of a fully cloud-native mobile network, I didn’t hesitate. It sounded impossible. That’s how I knew it was worth chasing.

I joined just as Rakuten Mobile was preparing to launch its unique network. The energy was electric. We weren’t just deploying infrastructure; we were redefining what a mobile network could be. I worked on network automation with a small team of recent graduates, building a platform called RMOPs to handle backups, switchovers, health checks, and upgrades. The first time we watched a full maintenance window pass without anyone touching a terminal, just clean logs and a stable network, I felt the same thrill I had back in Diani, when a radio I had dismantled switched on. That same rush of bringing something to life.

In 2021, 1&1 picked Rakuten Symphony to build Germany’s fourth mobile - fully cloud-native across core, OSS, BSS and RAN. It sounded impossible, and that was all I needed to hear.

I moved to Germany with a backpack, a terminal, and a hunger for the unknown. Together, we build the tools that make it repeatable upgrades, drivers, audits. The things that should happen quietly, so others can focus on building. It’s not loud, but it lasts. And that, to me is art.

What has been the highlight of your time at Rakuten Symphony?

There’s a night I still carry with me. It was late in the night in Düsseldorf Office; the room was dim, lit by the soft glow of dashboards and tired eyes. Months of delays had brought us here, each one heavier than the last. The architecture was ambitious, maybe even overreaching. But now, finally, everything was in place. We held our breath as the final configurations rolled out across the clusters. For a long second, nothing moved. Then the logs danced. Traffic flowed. Real users. Real sessions. Real proof.
Someone leaned back and whispered, “Sugoi na...” like they couldn’t believe it had worked. Another muttered, “Bhai, this thing is alive,” almost afraid to say it too loud. We exchanged glances not big cheers, just quiet smiles, wide eyes, a few hushed laughs. I wasn’t a new grad anymore, but I felt the same electricity I had back in Tokyo when Rakuten Mobile first launched. The same awe. The same pride. I stepped outside into the cool winter air, hands still shaking slightly, and just stood there. The silence felt earned.

What is an advice or work ethic that you follow?

Curiosity is my compass. Own what you touch. If something repeats, automate it. When something breaks, fix it in a way that it never breaks the same way again. And always leave a trail of breadcrumbs. Good documentation isn't just helpful; it's an act of generosity.

I also believe in momentum. Shipping something small today creates space for something bold tomorrow. It’s not about chasing perfection; it’s about stacking progress.

What are some hobbies you enjoy in your downtime?

Travel has shaped me deeply. I’ve been to more than 30 countries, and every city, every culture, teaches me something new. In 2021, I tried skiing for the first time in Hakuba, Japan, and I haven’t looked back since. There’s something about studying the slope, choosing your line, adjusting in real time, and staying calm under pressure that feels a lot like solving problems in production.

When I’m not outdoors, I disappear into my home lab. It’s where I explore the Linux kernel, cryptographic protocols, RAG architectures, and low-level network internals. I build, break, test, and iterate. I also contribute to open source, sometimes with code and often through documentation or issue triage. It keeps my thinking sharp and reminds me that even the smallest contribution can ripple far.

What’s next for you?

I want to go deeper into automation, autonomy, and resilience. There’s a future where networks can adapt, scale, heal, and optimize in real time. I want to help bring that future closer.

At the same time, I want to give back. I had mentors who trusted me before I had all the answers. I want to be that person for the next generation of engineers. Whether the work happens in Kenya, Japan, or Germany, I want to keep building platforms that work globally and teams that grow together across borders.

What advice would you give to new joiners at Rakuten Symphony?
Ask “why” until silence turns into understanding. Don’t be afraid to break things in the name of learning but always take responsibility for putting them back together. Build fast but build with care. Automate the boring parts. Write things down like someone else’s 3 a.m. shift depends on it, because someday, it will.

Get to know your tools. Get to know your team even better. And above all, protect your curiosity. That spark you have right now is the most valuable thing you bring to this table. Don’t let anything dim it. Some networks connect devices. The best ones connect people, ideas, and ambition. I like to think I work on both.

Personalized AI with efficient Japanese LLMs

Inside Rakuten AI: Maksim Tkachenko on the path to personalized AI with efficient Japanese LLMs

In this series, we sit down with Rakuten AI leaders for a deep dive into the stories behind this transformative technology and the inspiring individuals driving Rakuten’s vision of AI for all. Watch this interview and others in the Inside Rakuten AI series on our YouTube channel.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are at the forefront of the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. These powerful models are the engine driving AI and are reshaping how we interact with technology, promising a future where AI is not just a tool, but an intelligent force multiplier.

At Rakuten, a team of researchers is thinking outside the box and leveraging breakthrough innovation to push the boundaries of LLM development, aiming to create highly efficient models that leverage innovative architecture to understand user needs and become deeply integrated into their daily lives.
Leading this relentless drive is Maksim “Max” Tkachenko, General Manager of Frontier Research Department at Rakuten. His journey into AI began with a fascination for Natural Language Processing (NLP)-the intricate dance of explaining the fluid nature of human language to a computer through the rigid structure of mathematics.

“Language is a very fluid concept,” Max explains. “But you actually can add a lot of structure to it. And that’s where it gets really interesting. So, how do we explain the fluidity of language with the rigidity of mathematics? This question propelled me throughout my years of research as I went on to do a PhD in language processing.”

Even in his current role overseeing Rakuten’s ambitious LLM initiatives, Max maintains a clear focus on the core principle behind LLMs. “Language processing is an area of research that has always been changing: now we have language models. When we talk about training these models, that doesn’t mean we just tell the model what a noun is and that it has to be followed by a verb, but that was the case before. Now, we don’t need to describe to AI models how human language works. Rather, we can give it a big collection of texts and challenge it to try to figure out how it works.”

“In this way, AI models learn by performing a simple task: predicting the next word in a sequence,” he explains. “This seemingly straightforward process has proven to be an incredibly effective way to train a type of machinery that enables AI to do quite intelligent things with human language.”

The training process for LLMs unfolds in two key stages. The first involves the model learning the inherent structure and operation of language. “That’s just part one,” Max clarifies. “The second part involves demonstrating to the language model how to function and how to approach specific tasks. This is achieved by providing the models with annotated data, like an English sentence paired with its Japanese translation, or examples of how to write an email. Through this process, the LLM learns to simulate an annotator, developing the ability to perform a wide array of tasks and engage in more directed communication.”

Rakuten’s unique advantage: A data-rich ecosystem

Max joined Rakuten in 2022, initially focusing on machine translation. However, the emergence of easy to use and accessible generative AI technologies like ChatGPT was a watershed moment for the AI industry and a golden opportunity for him shift focus towards LLM development.

Today, he oversees a team dedicated to training and optimizing Rakuten’s own powerful models. This is a fundamental role with potential for outsized contributions and requires both strategic vision and deep domain knowledge. “Overseeing the entire language model development process involves multiple aspects including architectural design choices,” he explains. “We need to think about how we collect data and annotations.”

The diverse Rakuten Ecosystem, encompassing over 70 services in e-commerce, finance, telecom and more, provides a significant advantage in this endeavor. When discussing this unique positioning, Max starts from a high level, “Let’s step back a little bit and try to define what exactly is intelligence in language models. We can define intelligence through the set of different small tasks. We can categorize these tasks into different verticals.”

“So, for each domain we need to think about what kind of tasks we want to solve to achieve intelligence within this specific vertical, be it e-commerce or banking, and as we go on accumulating verticals we aggregate them into an intelligent machine that generalizes across multiple domains. So, in this case, I think Rakuten is uniquely positioned to understand and address vertical tasks in so many businesses and further develop general intelligence.”

The ability to leverage user behavior data, while safeguarding user privacy, is another key differentiator. “We can also access and gain understanding of an immense amount of data used in development. This data and domain knowledge comes from operating the businesses ourselves,” Max said. “For example, we can analyze purchase patterns to better understand how certain products relate to each other in the customer journey. This insight allows us to enhance personalization in our LLMs, enabling more relevant recommendations and tailored interactions.”

Driving towards personalized memory and lifelong conversations

Memory is a important key to personalization enabling concierge-like experiences with AI agents
As a leader, Max sets clear objectives for his team’s LLM development with an ambitious core mission, “We aim to deliver best-in-class Japanese large language models that understand the context of communication, cultural nuances of Japanese and deliver a personalized experience.” This overarching goal is pursued through aggressive innovation, constantly exploring cutting-edge research and making strategic architectural decisions to tailor LLMs to specific business verticals.

When asked about the key performance indicators (KPIs) for his team, Max emphasizes a focus on output rather than just speed of launch. “Our LLM KPIs are performance based,”he said. “Basically we’re looking at how accurate we can communicate in a variety of contexts, how accurate our personalization is.” This highlights a commitment to quality and relevance in every interaction.

The concept of personalization, a recurring theme in this discussion, is crucial. It’s not merely about the language an LLM uses, but its ability to deeply understand and match a user’s intent. Max provides a clear example, “If you’re talking to an AI assistant about ordering dinner but haven’t specified your preferred cuisine or delivery time, the chatbot will ask clarifying questions. However, if the system already knows your favorite restaurants, dietary restrictions, or usual order time, it can instantly suggest the perfect meal with minimal back-and-forth.”

This ability to “remember” previous interactions is paramount. Max paints a compelling picture of the possibilities of an intelligent agent with long-term memory, “For example, perhaps a year ago you mentioned that your anniversary is coming up and you’re looking for a gift. Why can’t we have a language model that remembers this detail and reminds you in advance?”

He imagines a scenario where an AI agent can tell you when your anniversary is coming up, then go ahead and recommend gifts and even tell you what you bought last time to avoid giving the same one again. This “memory,” he asserts, is a very important key to personalization as it enables concierge-like experiences where AI agents anticipate user needs across various aspects of their lives, from travel to shopping.

The Future is long context and architectural innovation

Rakuten’s LLMs include Rakuten AI 2.0, Rakuten AI 7B and the Rakuten AI 2.0 mini

Max and his team are exploring exciting developments, particularly in architectural design and training methodologies. The Rakuten 2.0 model utilizes the Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture. The team constantly innovates to achieve the aim of developing tailored LLMs for specific business verticals which offer enhanced personalized experiences.

Moving forward, Max is focusing on enabling LLMs to support lifelong conversations with the user. This involves processing very long context, a significant challenge that could unlock even deeper levels of personalization and continuous interaction. Rakuten is also further developing its comprehensive portfolio of models to meet all requirements and resource considerations in terms of speed, cost and accessibiilty.

Currently, Rakuten’s LLMs include Rakuten AI 2.0 for general world knowledge, the faster and resource-efficient Rakuten AI 7B and the Rakuten AI 2.0 mini, a small language model (SLM) capable of running offline on edge or mobile devices.

“They all kind of deliver the same experience,” Max notes, “The difference is subtle. The smaller models, while faster, naturally have limitations on the sheer volume of information they can store. While all models offer secure chat experiences, their world knowledge varies. Right now, the larger Rakuten 2.0 has a much broader understanding, capable of answering complex questions about topics such as physics, whereas smaller models are better suited for more focused tasks.”

Max envisions a future where intelligent AI agents can remember us and proactively fulfill our needs
By taking a practical and nuanced approach, Rakuten can develop and deploy the most effective and efficient LLM for each specific application within its vast and varied ecosystem.

As Max and his team accelerate innovation in the LLM space, leveraging the data-rich Rakuten Ecosystem and pushing the boundaries of personalization, we draw ever closer to a future where AI agents are not only smart, but also remember us and proactively fulfill our needs.

Japanese telecom major Rakuten Symphony is set to conduct a 5G proof of concept (PoC) with state-run BSNL as part of its deepening collaboration with Indian technology partners. The company, which has partnered with Tejas Networks for radio and core hardware, stated that it is also evaluating several Indian vendors for potential deployment in Japan, once they meet the country’s stringent quality standards — marking a significant vote of confidence in India’s growing telecom manufacturing and R&D ecosystem.

Rakuten Symphony, a subsidiary Rakuten Group, houses the group’s telecom and networking technologies and IPs.

“We’re working with Tejas and have also met with BSNL. We’re planning to do a 5G PoC with BSNL soon,” said Sharad Sriwastawa, Co-Chief Executive Officer of Rakuten Mobile and President of Rakuten Symphony, in an interaction with Moneycontrol on the sidelines of India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025.
Sriwastawa called India’s move to develop an indigenous 4G and 5G stack under the government’s Make in India vision “absolutely the right move.” He said the 4G stack being built by Tejas Networks, TCS, and C-DOT for BSNL is already strong and provides a solid foundation for domestic telecom innovation.

“We’ve already made multiple live calls using that setup,” Sriwastawa said, adding that the partnership combines Indian hardware innovation with Rakuten’s proven software stack.

Rakuten Symphony currently has around 3,000 employees in India working across Indore, Bengaluru, and other locations — focused on R&D, OSS, automation, and cloud technologies. Another 2,000 employees under Rakuten India support group-wide technology functions.

Rakuten’s Open RAN-based network in Japan is widely recognized as one of the world’s most advanced. The company operates about 400,000 cells and 100,000 macro sites, and has won multiple awards from OpenSignal and Ookla for network performance. Building on that experience, Rakuten Symphony has taken its Open RAN solutions global — powering Europe’s first Open RAN network in Germany with 1&1, which now serves over 25 million subscribers, and expanding into new markets such as Kuwait, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Ukraine.
