Blocked Bitcoin Websites Back Online After Court Case Win

A regional Russian court has overturned a decision today that restricted seven bitcoin websites from public access in January.

Russian-language bitcoin news blog BTCsec reported that a city court in Nevyansk had acted improperly by blocking the websites. As a result of the decision, educational and commercial websites including Bitcoin.org, Coinspot.ru and Indacoin.com will now be publicly accessible once again.

Representatives of certain affected websites had previously argued that there are no current laws that prohibit the release of information related to bitcoin or digital currency.

In interview, BTCsec's Ivan Tikhon told CoinDesk that the event, while positive, is unlikely to have a larger effect on the debate surrounding digital currency in Russia, owing largely to a forthcoming bill that would outlaw money surrogates.

"I do not know how it will affect the opinion of the government or the central bank," Tikhon said. "Bitcoin is not illegal, but this does not mean that everything will start to use it or that law enforcement will not exceed the official authority."

Liz Peek, a former Wall Street research analyst and the first woman to become a partner of a Wall Street firm, took a somewhat pessimistic stance on the technology this week.

Detailing bitcoin's flaws in a Fiscal Times piece, she arguably confused the bitcoin protocol's safety with that of the businesses operating with the technology.

Hong Kong Banks Hit By Bitcoin Ransom Demands

Two of the largest Hong Kong banks were targeted with distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks earlier this week by unknown parties demanding bitcoin ransoms.

Regional newspaper The Standard reported that the Bank of China (Hong Kong) and the Bank of East Asia were hit by the attacks last weekend. A representative for Bank of China confirmed that the attack took place on 9th May, telling CoinDesk:

   “With our constant monitoring mechanism and contingency measures in place to ensure the security and operation of the Company's website, our services and customer information have not been affected by the incident. The case was reported to the Hong Kong Police."

Factom Partners With Honduras Government on Blockchain Tech Trial


Decentralized recordkeeping startup Factom has reportedly partnered with the government of Honduras on a new land title registry initiative.

Reuters reported that the Texas-based company, in partnership with title software firm Epigraph, was working with the Honduran government to develop “a permanent and secure land title record system” using the bitcoin blockchain, the distributed ledger that tracks all bitcoin transactions.

Factom president Peter Kirby told the publication that discussions with the Honduran government began earlier this year. However, the company first hinted at a partnership earlier this week on its blog, when it said the proof of concept for a land registry tool was "being evaluated by select governments worldwide".

527 US Banks Have Failed Since Late 2008, but the Bitcoin Protocol ‘Still Hasn’t Been Hacked’

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) reports that there have been 527 bank failures in the U.S since the invention of Bitcoin in late 2008. While billions of dollars have been lost due to bank failures and hackings, the Bitcoin protocol itself has never been hacked.

Eric Voorhees, the founder of Shapeshift, tweeted recently:

Since 2009 through 2013, bank failures resulted in a total loss of at least US$65 billion, according to the FDIC. The largest bank failure in the history of the U.S. was the collapse of savings bank holding company Washington Mutual, which fell in 2008, taking with it over US$22 billion in losses. At the time, Bloomberg reported that “Washington Mutual, nicknamed WaMu, will lose about $21.7 billion from mortgages through 2011, more than the US$12 billion to US$19 billion that the company forecasted.”

Bankrate.com stated that the FDIC closes more banks each week. The number of bank failures have exponentially increased and have resulted in more than US$100 billion in losses over the last decade.

In February of 2015, international software security group Kaspersky Lab investigated a recent bank-security failure that resulted in US$1 billion in losses. Kaspersky reported that a cybergang called Carbanak hacked into 100 different financial institutions and stole up to US$10 million in each raid.

The cybergang used spear-phishing tactics to infect the computers of employees within well-established financial institutions. After months of surveillance, the hackers used their Carbanak malware to gain control of the banks’ internal networks and access the computers of administrators. They achieved access to bank operations and records, and they replicated the database accessible by employees in order to “mimic staff activity to transfer money and cash out.”

DCC Survey: 12% Of US Consumers ‘Likely’ To Use Bitcoin In 2015

The latest survey by the Digital Currency Council (DCC) reveals a record 12% of US consumers were either “likely” or “highly likely” to use Bitcoin in 2015.

A representative sample of 357 adult participants in March also reflected the growing trend of younger age groups fuelling interest and practical usage of digital currency. The findings formed part of the DCC’s seventh and latest Pulse Report, an ad hoc statistics series on a range of issues affecting the digital currency industry.

DCC CEO David Berger commented on the results:

   “Not unlike other new technologies, the early adopters of Bitcoin will be at the ​younger end of the demographic spectrum. My mom may never use Bitcoin, but my daughter definitely will.”

BitNational Unveils Canada's Largest ATM Network, Offering BTC Below Market Price

Bitcoin brokerage BitNational is set to roll out the largest bitcoin brokerage and ATM network in Western Canada, as it looks to increase trust and access to Bitcoin in the region and beyond.

The network, which will be launched at the 1019 17th Ave. Calgary brokerage on May, comes after the acquisition earlier this month of Bitcoin Brains, Calgary’s oldest and most established bitcoin brokerage, for US$2.1 million.

The acquisition made BitNational the largest over-the-counter bitcoin brokerage and ATM network in Canada, with co-founder Matt Haddon saying at the time it was a significant step towards building a nationwide network in the country.

BitNational plans to launch the new network, which it says will bring Canadians ease of access and a name to trust within the digital currency sector, in partnership with Waves Coffee House. Waves will be initiating the largest storefront support in Canada for buying food and beverages and trading with bitcoin.

“We see this as the opportune moment to raise serious awareness about bitcoin,” said BitNational co-founder Drew Glover. He added:

   “There is a rapidly expanding group of individuals around the planet beginning to comprehend the significance of this innovative technology. This is not going away anytime soon.”

Central bank policy and regulations have made the markets illiquid. This combined with herd-mentality trading will have a negative impact on the economy when markets start re-pricing assets based on different valuation scenarios, which can happen unexpectedly and very quickly. In a recent memo, famed hedge fund manager Howard Marks of Oaktree Capital succinctly addressed misconceptions about liquidity and what the important definition of liquidity is.

“But the more important definition of liquidity is this one from Investopedia: ‘the degree to which an asset or security can be bought or sold in the market without affecting the asset’s price,’” said Marks. He added:

   “Thus the key criterion isn’t ‘can you sell it?’ It’s ‘can you sell it at a price equal or close to the last price?’  […] For them to be truly liquid in this latter sense, one has to be able to move them promptly and without the imposition of a material discount.”

Bei aller Euphorie für den BTC sollte man sich immer mal die Frage stellen, wieviele Panzer und Kanonen hinter dem BTC stehen und wieviele hinter dem Dollar, dem Euro und dem System der Zentralbanken - oder man könnte es auch so sagen: Was gut für die Menschheit wäre, muss sich nicht zwangsläufig schnell durchsetzen, falls es Mächtigen nicht in derer Kram passt. Das ist wie mit dem Frieden auf der Welt: der wäre zwar toll - aber es gibt ihn nicht.

CSI Cyber, which recently aired its season finale, featured Bitcoin as a theme throughout the episode entitled “Bit By Bit.” Filled with crypto mystery, the plot is loosely based on the headlines of a teenage bitcoin trader who murders his roommate.

The cast tries to understand the concept of digital currency, but most of the time the story is better told through the technology itself. Here’s a line, for example, from one of the episode’s victims:

‘Bit by Bit’

CBS provides a synopsis for the show about a cyber-team investigation of a hacker who uses a power outage in Detroit to mask a jewelry store heist and murder. The show starts right off with Daniel Krumitz, a detective played by Charlie Koontz, using his computer to find the hacker.

A massive power outage has occurred in Detroit 36 hours earlier, and the traffic system downtown is disabled. Meanwhile, a hacker opens a dialer vault, but viewers are kept in the dark about what he is stealing. CSI investigators the heist involves jewelry, but lo and behold, the actual thievery involves Bitcoin.

The main detectives use the blockchain as means to find the culprit. Krumitz explains the blockchain’s process and that anyone can find any transaction. He goes further into the topic of holding private keys and suggests that the person holding the keys is likely the killer. Viewers receive a long-winded explanation of how the blockchain ledger records everything. In this scene, Koontz looks as though he has done a little homework.

Folglich geschieht immer das selbe, das Geld fliesst in die Finanzmärkt, da Geld nicht nur einfach so rum liegen kann! Diese Pumpen sich auf unabhängig von der Realwirtschaft (ich möchte an die letzte Nachricht der FED erinnern, die da warnte), bis keiner mehr kaufen möchte!!! Dann bricht das Kartenhaus zusammen!
Deswegen haben wir immer wieder Finanzblasen, vereinfacht dargestellt!
