LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Shares in Canadian telecommunications equipment maker Nortel Networks (Toronto:NT.TO - News; NYSE:NT - News) leapt on Tuesday after a newspaper report said it had won a supply deal worth up to one billion euros ($1.13 billion).

French daily Le Figaro said in an introduction to an interview with Nortel Chief Executive Frank Dunn published on Tuesday that France Telecom's (Paris:FTE.PA - News) Orange (Paris:ORA.PA - News) unit and Nortel had signed the deal on third-generation mobile network equipment worth 800 million to 1.0 billion euros last week.
France Telecom and Nortel declined to comment on the report, which cited no sources.
Nortel shares in Frankfurt (Frankfurt:NT.F - News) were up 5.3 percent to 3.76 euro ($4.24), up 2.7 percent on their New York close on Monday.
The news hit Nortel's European competitors, with Finnish handset maker Nokia (NOV1.HE) down 1.5 percent and France's Alcatel (Paris:CGEP.PA - News) down 1.4 percent, making them the two largest decliners in the DJ Stoxx 50 index (Zurich:^STOXX50E - News).
"Definitely (the Orange news) are a bit worrying for Nokia. There is a lot of price pressure in the networks' market currently and Nokia's network unit has recently not been able to get sizeable 3G deals" said Conventum analyst Jari Honko in Helsinki.
