Bank of Ireland surges; Oracle wins $1.3 bln verdict
By Carla Mozee, MarketWatch
LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) — U.S.-listed shares of Bank of Ireland climbed late Tuesday following a report that the Irish government will take a majority stake in the company, while Oracle Corp. shares rose after the software firm won a jury verdict in its battle against SAP AG.
Bank of Ireland shares /quotes/comstock/13*!ire/quotes/nls/ire (IRE 2.03, +0.33, +19.41%) gained 19% to $2.02 in heavy volume after the Financial Times’ report, citing government officials, about the Irish government’s plans for the commercial bank.
The reported move comes after Ireland this week applied for international aid to shore up its banking sector.
Oracle shares /quotes/comstock/15*!orcl/quotes/nls/orcl (ORCL 27.55, +0.36, +1.32%) rose 1.3% to $27.55 after the company won a $1.3 billion verdict in its long-running intellectual-property-theft dispute with rival SAP.
SAP had acknowledged the wrongdoing by its now defunct subsidiary, TomorrowNow, though the German software giant had argued that damages should come in around $40 million. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2007. Read about the verdict in Oracle's favor.
Meanwhile, Guess Inc. shares advanced after the apparel retailer raised its yearly outlook and said it plans to pay a special dividend. In addition to releasing its latest financial figures, Guess reported a fourth-quarter forecast that came in higher than Wall Street’s current projections, and the company lifted its fiscal 2011 view.

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) — The Irish government will reportedly take a majority stake in lender Bank of Ireland, as it struggles to try and restore credibility to the country’s battered banking sector and economy.
American-listed shares of the Irish lender surged about 15% in late U.S. trading on Tuesday after the Financial Times reported, citing Irish government officials, that a stake purchase in Bank of Ireland (IE:BIR 0.30, -0.09, -23.65%) (IRE 1.98, +0.28, +16.47%) could form part of an 85 billion euro ($113.8 billion) rescue plan to be put in place by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - The European Union and IMF (Berlin: MXG1.BE - news) bailout package for Ireland (Berlin: IIK.BE - news) will total 85 billion euros (72 billion pounds) over three years to fund the government deficit and recapitalise banks, public broadcaster RTE said.
The Irish Finance Ministry dismissed the report as premature and said the package was still under negotiation.
RTE's figure, which would amount to roughly 20,000 euros per Irish citizen, is in line with figures estimated by economists, although some have said that even more could be needed to keep the country afloat.
RTE said the package from the EU and the International Monetary Fund would provide 48 billion euros to help fund the Irish government's deficit over the next three years and 15-20 billion to recapitalise its banks, with a contingency fund of 20 billion euros for the banks.
"The package would see the level of capital in the Irish banks being increased from eight to 12 percent in a move to bolster confidence of depositors in the financial system," RTE said. The broadcaster did not say how it had obtained the information.
Such a deal would see the Irish government increase its stake in banks that received the funding. The Financial Times said the government would end up with a majority stake in Bank of Ireland (Dublin: BIR.IR - news) .
"I see there's all sorts of speculation. It's just speculation," a Finance Ministry spokesman said.
"The technical teams are still trying to work out what the package will be," he added. "We are expecting these discussions will take a couple of weeks. They only started on Monday."
Ireland agreed to the bailout on Sunday after heavy selling of Ireland's bonds pushed up yields on its debt.
