CORRECTED - UPDATE 2-Tenneco profit up 26 pct, shares rise
       TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2003 12:19 PM
- Reuters U.S. Company News

In July 22 Chicago story headlined "Tenneco profit up 26 pct, shares rise," please read in third paragraph ... "Three analysts polled by Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc, had an average estimate of 28 cents a share" instead of "5 cents." (Corrects figure).

A corrected version follows.

CHICAGO, July 22 (Reuters) - Tenneco Automotive Inc. (TEN) , one of the world's largest makers of vehicle shock absorbers, on Tuesday said quarterly earnings rose by 26 percent, above expectations, sending its shares 13 percent higher.

Lake Forest, Illinois-based Tenneco, which also makes exhaust systems, said second-quarter net income rose to $24 million, or 58 cents a share, from $19 million, or 45 cents a share, boosted by the strong euro and higher sales of emission-control products in Europe.

Three analysts polled by Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc, had an average estimate of 28 cents a share.

Revenue rose to $998 million from $948 million as the weaker dollar boosted results.

Without the impact of favorable currency translation, revenue would have declined to $922 million, hurt by weaker sales of replacement parts, the company said.

In Europe, sales to automotive manufacturers increased, while North American revenue declined due to weaker vehicle production and softer sales in the aftermarket, Tenneco said.

It said increased working capital and tax settlement costs contributed to negative cash flow of $35 million in the period, but it said cash use is typically higher in the second quarter ahead of the spring and summer selling seasons for the aftermarket.

The company closed a $350 million offering of 10.25 percent senior secured notes in the quarter, using proceeds to pay off $87 million of borrowings under its revolving credit facility and to repay $251 million in senior term loans.

Shares of Tenneco climbed 57 cents, or 13.48 percent, to $4.80 on Tuesday morning on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sunwear Over the Rainbow
Wednesday March 2, 7:55 am ET
By Rick Aristotle Munarriz

The weather outside may be frightful, but inside Pacific Sunwear the quarterly reports are delightful. The surf and skate apparel retailer's healthy holiday showing included a 26% jump in earnings per share during its January quarter, while sales inched 16% higher.

Having earned $1.37 a share over the course of its fiscal year prices the stock at less than 20 times earnings. That's certainly a fair price of admission for a company that is growing its bottom line at a richer clip than that rate while sporting a lively surge in popularity at the store level.

Its empire of PacSun and d.e.m.o. stores continued to produce after the quarter was over as same-store sales were up an impressive 10.5% for the month of February. That leaves the company comfortable with Wall Street's targets of $0.23 a share in profits for the April quarter -- more than twice what it produced a year earlier. The company has been aggressively buying back its shares over the past year and with its prospects improving with every passing quarter, it proved to be a great move.

Sure, the mall can be a tricky place. Perhaps it's why Peter Lynch was always armed with his wife and daughters when he went to scout out new stock ideas in the topsy-turvy world of retail.

It's not easy for mainstream retailers, so you can only imagine how tough it is for specialty retailers catering to teens. So how do you avoid the stumbling Hot Topic and Wet Seal while cashing in on winners like Aeropostale , Urban Outfitters , or American Eagle Outfitters ?

Following comps is usually a pretty good indicator. As long as its not margin-busting clearance sales driving sales at the store level higher, you know you're on to a good concept if same-store sales keep inching up.

For Pacific Sunwear there is also an interesting trend at play. After nailing analyst estimates -- exactly -- for seven straight quarters it has topped Wall Street's forecasts over the past five periods.

If you're concerned that the company is fine with the current quarter's forecast, meaning that it will fail to lap that target for a sixth straight outing, take a load off. Back in January the company indicated that it was comfortable with analysts' fourth quarter estimates before besting that sum by a penny per share last night.

So, no, it's probably not a good thing to buy into an edgy specialty retailer and then just doze off. Abercrombie & Fitch has had more ups and downs than a stadium doing the wave. Yet there are times when a specialty retailer is doing so well that an investor can afford to take a breather for a few months. That would be PacSun right now. Its shoppers are more interested in hitting the waves than making them.
