(Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced the opening of a new design center in Boulder, Colorado. The design center is staffed with a team of senior engineers with design expertise in wireless systems architectures. The Boulder office will focus on designing low-cost, highly optimized integrated solutions that support the convergence of multiple standards, such as cellular, wireless LAN, Bluetooth(TM) and global positioning system (GPS). RFMD anticipates the design center will leverage the Company's position in the cellular and wireless LAN markets to enable highly integrated convergence solutions. RFMD established its Boulder design center by acquiring the assets, primarily intellectual property, of Channel Technology, a privately held RF and mixed signal semiconductor company providing leadership solutions in wireless data communications. Specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The employees of Channel Technology will become employees of RF Micro Devices. The Boulder design center is part of RFMD's research and development organization and provides RFMD with a unique combination of digital signal processor (DSP) and RF/analog skills to generate new approaches to multi-standard radio and baseband system-on-a-chip (SoC) integration. With over 60 combined years of CMOS mixed signal, RF and DSP design experience, the Boulder team brings intellectual property to RFMD that is expected to enable the Company to file a number of patents in the fields of communications, data conversion and DSP.
