China increasing pressure on illegal rare earth activities
An official from the MIIT said in December that “The campaign’s success or failure is the standard for whether the rare earth prices will remain on a steady recovery.” In fact, the Chinese authorities have sent a “very clear signal” to the rare earth market that they will adopt a series of measures designed to push the rare earth prices north and to insure that there is not a sharp drop in the price of rare earth exports after the removal of the rare earth tariffs in May of this year.
The price of dysprosium and terbium, which are often the bellwether for a group of 17 related rare earth elements in the country’s rare earth market suggest that prices will continue to increase. This backed by the unusual step from the Chinese government issuing a statement whereby they will punish illegal rare earth activities, and the rumor that the government may launch another round of national stockpiling to further to strengthen its control on their supply of rare earth will undoubtedly bode well for those investing in rare earths in 2015.
