"-Bookham Technology non-executive director wins Nobel Prize - 12 October, 2000
Jack S. Kilby's invention created the information age
Oxfordshire, UK: Jack S. Kilby, non-executive director of Bookham Technology, has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. This is in recognition for his part in the invention and development of the integrated circuit, more commonly referred to as the microchip. Jack Kilby joined Bookham Technology in February, where he serves on the board of directors in an advisory capacity.
"We are absolutely delighted that Jack has received the highest recognition for his invaluable contribution to modern technology," commented Andrew Rickman, Chairman and CEO on behalf of Bookham Technology. "It is a great personal honour to have the ability to seek his advice on the future direction of the company."
Kilby independently undertook the invention of the monolithic integrated circuit in 1958, when he was working for Texas Instruments. This tiny invention has helped create the electronics industry as we know it today. Without the microchip everyday appliances such as computers, mobile phones and devices such as digital watches and video recorders would not have been possible.
Jack Kilby holds over 60 US patents. Among other things he is co-inventor of the pocket calculator, one of the first applications of the integrated circuit. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He has been awarded the Franklin Institute's Stuart Ballantine Medal, The NAE's Vladimir Zworykin Award, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Holley Medal, and the IEEE's Medal of Honour, Cledo Brunetti Award, and David Sarnoff Award. In 1988, on the 30th anniversary of the invention of the integrated circuit, the Governor of Texas dedicated an official Texas historical marker near the site of the TI library where Kilby did his work.
