NEXT week Saturday (22nd October) will go down in the history books of the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea as the Melanesian version of a ‘royal wedding’.
That is when a local Solomon Islands lady Esmie Ereoli will walk down the aisle and exchange vows with her husband to be; the Governor General of Papua New Guinea Sir Michael Ogio.
This will be the first ever State wedding in the history of Papua New Guinea.
But the focus is really on the bride to be.
Questions have been asked by everyone including the international media as well as the local media as to who is this mysterious Solomon Island lady.
Her name is Esmie Ereoli and she comes from South Malaita.
She used to work at the Pacific Casino Hotel as a housekeeping maid.
However, she resigned 5 months ago to sort out her travel arrangements for her wedding.
The Solomon Star spoke to her head supervisor Lynnette Buarafi yesterday who confirmed the smart and hardworking Esmie was a member of her staff.
Ms Buarafi described Esmie as a kind, loving, hardworking lady who opens up to everyone.
“She is very kind and loving and we cannot believe she is getting married to the Governor General of PNG; we are proud of her,” Ms Buarafi said.
Well, friends close to Esmie said the Cinderella story begun in October 2009 when Esmie met Sir Michael at the Pacific Casino Hotel.
Sir Michael back then was one of the minister’s who accompanied the former Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare who led a delegation to attend the opening of the University of Papua New Guinea open campus in Honiara.
Friends close to Esmie said they started dating then and kept their 25 months relationship alive until they decided to get married.
“They only met once and then they only contacted through phone when the groom to be returned until today,” friends close to the bride to be said.
From an ordinary housekeeping maid and to become a Lady is no easy task for Esmie, but her friends said they have groomed her to become what is expected of her.
“It will be a totally new life for her but we are confident and we believe in her,” her friends said.
Papua New Guinea is set to witness the country’s first ever State wedding.
The wedding will be held on Saturday 22 October.
The Vice Regal's office in Port Moresby has made a public announcement of the wedding.
Catholic Archbishop John Ribat will preside over the marriage ceremony at the St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown Port Moresby.
A State reception will then follow at the State Function Room, Parliament House.
PNG’s Governor General Sir Michael Ogio comes from Bougainville.
He has been voted in as Governor General in January this year but has been living without a Lady.
Esmie and her friends are expected to fly over to Port Moresby for the wedding over the weekend.
