Obama’s Talk Hits Home For Union, Politicians
SMITHFIELD - The possibilities for industrial revitalization as well as support of working families hit a chord with people at Sen. Barack Obama's visit to the Piergallini farm on Jefferson County Road 10 Wednesday afternoon.
When Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, speaks about the need for renewable energy and the possibilities for clean coal, it gets the attention of U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio.
Wilson also spoke during Obama's visit to the Piergallini farm.
"He understands that coal is a natural resource that can be burned clean," Wilson said.
He said Obama has a grasp of trade issues that, when coupled with his plan to make health care available to all "will help America to get out of this rut we're in."
After the event, Wilson said it was exciting to have Obama in his congressional district.
"I am excited about him. He is genuine - very sincere - in his effort to make a difference," said the first-term Democrat.
Wilson has advocated the Ohio Valley can become a "new energy" corridor for the nation, dealing with clean coal technology, coal-to-liquid fuel plants and renewable energy.
"When I hear the next president of the United States talking about making liquid fuel out of coal and burning coal cleanly, that's important to me," Wilson said.
For Santo Santoro, a District 1 staff member for the United Steelworkers union, it's the support of the middle class voiced by Obama that gets his attention.
"(Sen. John) McCain tries to say Obama will raise taxes. He can't match with his tax cut the amount that Obama would cut. Obama is willing to give money back to 95 percent of the people," Santoro said.
When asked if he believes Obama would be good for organized labor, Santoro said, "I think he works awfully close to Leo (Gerard, USW International president)."
Jefferson County Commissioner Thomas Graham said of Obama, "He's one of the greatest orators I've ever witnessed."
