Boost Mobile and Minty

Driving incremental growth through smarter shopper re-engagement
In the wireless industry, many shoppers research online but purchase in-store, making it harder to capture the full value of high-intent site traffic. Boost Mobile wanted to increase conversions and measurable online revenue without disrupting its existing affiliate strategy.

Rakuten Advertising identified an opportunity to extend Boost Mobile’s performance by bringing Minty into the affiliate ecosystem, re-engaging qualified shoppers, and converting more existing traffic without adding friction. Just as importantly, the strategy was designed to focus on conversions that added net-new value, giving Boost Mobile a more accountable way to scale partner performance.

The Rakuten Advertising Solution
Rakuten Advertising brought Minty into the affiliate program as a complementary partner, combining a fast, low-lift integration with an incrementality-focused approach to drive additional conversions without disrupting Boost Mobile’s existing strategy. By maintaining clear visibility into partner contribution and conversion activity, Rakuten Advertising helped ensure the program stayed focused on performance that was both efficient and additive.

Rapidly closing in on 11 million subscriber mark

Rapidly closing in on the 11 million subscriber mark

As of late August 2026, Rakuten Mobile is rapidly closing in on the 11 million subscriber mark, having officially reached 10.75 million total subscribers at the end of June 2026. This represents a net addition of 1.78 million users over the previous year, fueled by aggressive customer acquisition and stronger ecosystem integration.

The company crossed the major 10 million subscriber milestone on December 25, 2025, and has maintained steady upward momentum through 2026. This rapid growth in subscriptions has successfully narrowed operating losses and propelled the parent organization, Rakuten Group, back to overall net profitability for the first time in several years.

Key Growth Drivers in 2026

Ecosystem Synergy: Rakuten Mobile serves as a powerful funnel for the broader company. Mobile subscribers use 2.43 times more services across the Rakuten network (such as FinTech and Internet Services) than non-mobile customers.

Network Infrastructure & 5G Expansion: The carrier is investing 200 billion yen in capital expenditure (CAPEX) for 2026 to upgrade network capacity and coverage. Key projects include major 5G upgrades along Tokyo's heavily traveled JR Yamanote Line and introducing MIMO technology across the Tokyo Metro subway system.

Platinum Band Deployment: Rolling out commercial services on the 700 MHz "platinum band" has vastly improved building penetration and connectivity in difficult-to-reach urban locations.

Satellite-to-Mobile Connectivity: Backed by a ¥150 billion domestic satellite investment roadmap from the Japanese government, Rakuten is actively working with AST SpaceMobile to launch direct satellite-to-cell services in late 2026 to eliminate remote coverage dead zones.

From Agent to Super Agent

08.09.26 08:59
Dawn of the Super Agent: Mikitani at Rakuten AI Optimism 2026

At the 2026 Rakuten AI Optimism conference, Rakuten Group Chairman and CEO Mickey Mikitani made it clear that the AI boom is not just another passing trend.

“We are entering an era where most people are using AI, even without realizing it,” he told the packed conference hall crowd. “The key question is, is this AI revolution the same as the internet revolution? And the answer is no, it’s totally different. It has an impact far beyond simply making things more efficient; it is changing the definition of almost everything.”

From Agent to Super Agent

Mikitani laid out Rakuten’s AI goals plainly and clearly: “We intend to become the platform that utilizes AI the most in the world.”

The integration of Rakuten AI in its services and systems is creating a seamless experience across the entire Rakuten Ecosystem – instead of isolated tools for businesses like Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Travel, or Rakuten Mobile, the company is bridging them all together into a unified Super Agent.

“Rakuten Group’s unique strength lies in our comprehensive ecosystem: shopping, travel, credit cards, golf, banking, securities – covering nearly every aspect of daily life,” Mikitani told the capacity audience. “By understanding all this connected data, the Super Agent acts as a personal executive assistant… From consultation to service booking and payment completion, our Super Agent works seamlessly across services.”

This high level of integration is allowing Rakuten AI to effectively function in the real world.

“The interface won’t be limited to the Rakuten Ichiba website or app; it can reach users through multiple channels – allowing you to shop via messaging alone,” Mikitani noted. “It’s also integrated with third party external apps and tools like maps. If a user from Tokyo travels to Sendai, it can suggest local specialty sweets on the spot.”

To help illustrate what this level of hyper-personalization offers, Rakuten’s Yupeng Zhang walked the audience through a live demonstration of the Super Agent planning a family trip to Okinawa. By tapping into the AI’s memory of past user behaviors, the agent prioritized accommodations with a kitchen and even added sunscreen to the order list, recalling that he had suffered a sunburn on his vacation the previous year.

Through simple natural language, Zhang then instructed the agent to adjust the trip for a “more relaxed pace,” whereupon it blocked the dates on Zhang’s calendar app, drafted an itinerary email to his wife, and even suggested tricks to boost his Rakuten Point multipliers.

“This Super Agent capability is a service unique to the Rakuten Ecosystem,” Mikitani noted. “While open architectures allow for many things, having rich historical data within an integrated ecosystem – alongside deep business relationships with merchants and hotel partners – allows us to achieve a far higher level of accuracy.”

Meet your new AI Store Manager, Ichiko

Rakuten’s vision for a Super Agent ecosystem ensures that humans remain firmly in the spotlight. Mikitani has long pushed back against the idea of e-commerce platforms functioning as faceless vending machines, and this philosophy has a place in Rakuten’s AI strategy, too.

“Ultimately, a real human handling things is best. At the same time, humans can’t process tens of thousands of requests 24/365,” he told the Optimism crowd. “By loading the store manager’s profile, personality, and persona, each store can have its own AI Shop Manager.”

Mikitani held an onstage demonstration of Rakuten’s new AI Store Manager, tentatively named Ichiko. Leveraging a merchant’s specific personality and deep product knowledge, shops will be able to create their own 24/7 AI avatars capable of handling complex inquiries and assisting customers with their shopping.

Instead of simply fetching generic product specifications from the public web, the AI Store Manager leverages Rakuten’s ecosystem to read a shopper’s broader ‘persona’ and tailor responses accordingly. A user shopping for golf clubs, for example, will be recommended an entirely different set depending on whether their history shows they are a seasoned player or a complete beginner.

“Humans need human treatment,” Mikitani stressed. “We need AI with a human touch.”

Taking AI in-house

To navigate the global AI revolution, Rakuten is leaning heavily on its proprietary data and developing its own Japanese-centric LLMs to avoid escalating costs and security concerns.

“In business terms, last year AI contributed about 25.5 billion yen in profit for the Rakuten Group,” Mikitani shared. “Why does Rakuten have an advantage over other companies? AI is ultimately a processing algorithm; it’s an equation. The variables in that equation are data. Data is the diamond in the rough, and the quality and volume of that data are crucial.”

Rakuten Group Executive Officer and Director of the AI Services Supervisory Department Taku Okoshi joined Mikitani onstage to shed light on Rakuten’s rapid deployment of these in-house models.

“At the beginning of this year, we released our 700-billion-parameter model, Rakuten AI 3.0. Looking at the Japanese AI market, several companies are building proprietary models, but as of now, we believe we are the only company developing a 700-billion-parameter class model,” Okoshi said, noting that the LLM accounted for roughly 19% of all AI token usage within Rakuten. “Beyond internal use, we plan to power the backend of our customer-facing services like Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Travel.”

The true power of Rakuten’s approach lies in the ability to leverage deep user histories without prohibitive computational costs. Yu Hirate of the Rakuten Institute of Technology gave a compelling demonstration of this novel architecture in action.

“We fed 18 years of purchase history of a single user (Hirate himself) into the LLM currently under development, and asked it: How have this user’s purchasing trends changed over time?” Hirate explained. “The LLM successfully detected that starting around 2021, I began repeatedly buying products from a specific brand. During COVID-19, as work-from-home increased, I bought various gadgets, fell in love with one specific manufacturer, and kept buying their products. The LLM accurately captured this behavioral shift from 18 years of data.”

Japan’s position in the AI race

“Looking at the bigger picture: Who will win the AI race?”

While a handful of frontier AI labs continue to push the pace, releasing industry-leading models and technology, Mikitani sees another significant trend in motion: the movement towards open-source models.

“Open-source AI will likely continue to rise and compete. Looking at American and Chinese [open source] models, they are catching up at amazing speeds. Therefore, it remains to be seen who will win. It’s even possible that AI models will transition completely to open source.”

As for Japan’s place in the AI race, Mikitani noted that the country “is lagging about 3, 4, or 5 laps behind.” However, he added, “we at Rakuten Group believe it is essential for us to develop our own fundamental AI [to empower Japan].” Many of Rakuten’s own AI models are based on open models, including its largest models like Rakuten AI 7B, Rakuten AI 2.0 and Rakuten AI 3.0.

Grounding AI in human empathy

Regardless of technological leaps or global competition, Mikitani stressed that AI development must remain grounded in fundamental human empathy.

“An AI acting as a shopping agent shouldn’t just execute transactions; it needs to understand intent, make proactive suggestions, and maintain the unique characteristics of each shop.”

For Rakuten, meanwhile, the future of AI isn’t about stripping away this humanity, but empowering it.
“AI is going to fundamentally evolve our services. But no matter how far we go, the most important thing is how we value the human element. We have always maintained that internet shopping is not a vending machine,” Mikitani concluded. “I believe that building this fundamentally Rakuten-style AI is what is important.”

Rakuten Viber Launches a ChatGPT-Powered Unread Summary Feature: What It Can Do

08/09/2026

The Rakuten Viber team announced the launch of a new feature – Unread Summary – which is powered by ChatGPT and allows users to quickly catch up on the highlights of chats they haven’t had a chance to read yet.

The “Unread Summary” feature generates a concise summary of all chats with missed messages, so instead of having to review every conversation, users receive a brief summary of their content from ChatGPT. After reviewing the summary – which fits on a single screen – users can mark the chat as read, save it for later, or join the conversation.

According to Viber data, nearly one-third of users have 20 or more unread messages every day, and thanks to the new feature, it will take only a few seconds to review them.

AI helps readers slow down and savor great stories

09.09.26 22:08
How AI is helping readers slow down and savor great stories

Key highlights:

Instead of using AI primarily to maximize speed, the future of reading tech lies in helping us slow down and deeply appreciate literature

AI will likely widen the gap between authentic, high-quality literature rooted in human experiences and more superficial content

AI has the potential to support readers throughout the entire reading lifecycle: helping them discover the right books, facilitating deep immersive reading and enabling deeper reflection afterward

In the modern digital age, the word artificial intelligence has become synonymous with speed. We use AI to synthesize reports or summarize lengthy articles into quick bullet points in seconds. But what if the most profound application of this technology was not to help us do more, but to help us do less?

What if, instead of accelerating our lives, AI was used to help us slow down?

This was the central theme at the Rakuten Kobo session during Rakuten AI Optimism. A panel of experts challenged the current narrative of AI as an efficiency tool, exploring its potential to linger in the atmosphere of a story. The discussion featured Sabrina Watanabe, General Manager of Rakuten Kobo Japan; Yohei Sadoshima, founder and CEO of Cork Inc. and editor of hit series like Space Brothers and Dragon Zakura; and Rikie Ishii, a creativity engineering expert and a lecturer at Waseda University.

How can AI help us slow down?

Watanabe kicked off the session by highlighting that the true potential of reading technology lies in its ability to help us maintain focus. “In a world where information is constantly pouring in, our mission is to provide a space for deep, uninterrupted thought through our Kobo eReaders,” Watanabe said. “We’re looking at how AI can help us create an environment where people can slow down and truly immerse themselves in the literature.”

For Sadoshima, AI serves as a tool serves to engage with a story on a deeper level. Having managed Space Brothers, a hit Japanese manga series that spanned 18 years and 46 volumes, Sadoshima has experimented with AI to heighten his own appreciation of the work. “I asked AI to create a “tasting menu” of themes and emotions based on the lines that moved me most,” he explained.

The editor also used AI to generate music as a feedback tool. “If a new artist struggles to draw a suspenseful scene, I might generate tense music and ask them to develop a scene that perfectly captures that mood. It is a way to guide the work while giving the creator the autonomy to use their own imagination.”

Ishii sees this as a move from simple text-based commands toward ambient sensory output that engages all five senses. “Using ambient music to provide feedback is a high-level management tool,” Ishii noted. “It allows an editor to empathize with the author’s vision and guide the work without stifling their unique voice.”

For the reader, this means transforming what would otherwise be a quick reading session into a multi-hour artistic experience. Sadoshima explained that when he encounters a poem that moves him, he uses AI to translate it into different languages or even generate a unique musical score that resonates with his own interpretation. “I might spend three minutes reading a poem, but then spend hours translating it and generating a song to match,” the veteran editor said. “I then repeat that song hundreds of times while I read the poem, letting the atmosphere sink in.” He believes that by encouraging readers to curate their own sensory environment, we can transform the way stories are felt and remembered.

How can AI transform the reader’s journey?

The panel then explored how Rakuten Kobo could support the three phases of reading that Watanabe identified: discovery (pre-reading), immersion (mid-reading) and reflection (post-reading).

Ishii proposed that future e-readers could analyze physiological markers such as pupil dilation to better understand which scenes capture a reader’s attention most. “Human pupils tend to expand when they see something that stimulates their emotions,” Ishii noted. “If we could analyze when a reader’s pupils expand, we could understand in which scenes they are truly reacting.”

Watanabe agrees that such innovations could redefine the reader’s journey. “It would be wonderful if we could explore the possibility of incorporating biometric analysis features in the future,” she said. “That would help us move beyond standard recommendation algorithms to a much more accurate level of personalization.”

Does human touch still matter?

Despite the potential offered by such technology, the panel emphasized that human-made art remains irreplaceable. While it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to distinguish between AI and human-made content, there remains a persistent preference for the latter, Ishii said.  “The sentences that feel real, the ones where you can almost feel the blood behind the words, are something only a human can create.”

Sadoshima added that a great story is built on the author’s raw, authentic experiences. “A good author must be able to convey what they have truly lived,” he said. “They take a specific memory, such as the scent of a room or the posture of a person during a conversation, and graft that into the story. That’s a strength unique to human authors.”

Watanabe believes that the rise of AI will cement the value of these authentic human stories. “I think the gap between superficial and deep, meaningful work will only grow,” she noted. “AI will act as a bridge, helping people navigate the noise to find the stories that actually matter to them.”

Human-made content will remain irreplaceable, even as AI pervades.

What is next for the reading experience?

As a leader in digital publishing and e-reader hardware, the mission for Rakuten Kobo is to expand the reading ecosystem and broaden the reader’s experience, supporting them from the moment they discover a book to the final moments of reflection. From personalized soundscapes or discovery tools that truly understand a reader’s taste, the goal is to make reading more personal.

“Whether it takes one year or ten, we are fully committed to evolving our platform and finding ways to provide an even higher-quality reading experience for those who love to read,” Watanabe stressed. “Popularity does not mean a book is right for everyone. We still have a long way to go in terms of personalization, but I’m excited about the potential we have in this area.”

As the session concluded, Watanabe emphasized that in an age of screen fatigue and constant digital noise, the hardware must remain a place where eyes do not grow tired and the mind can rest.

Fair value of 2048 Yen

10.09.26 14:19

The Rakuten Group's financial results for the April-June quarter, announced on August 10, 2026, show a net profit of 7.7 billion yen. In the same period last year, it posted a loss of 50.9 billion yen. This is the first time in six years, since the April-June quarter of 2020, that the company has achieved a quarterly pre-tax and post-tax profit.

note.com/rivas_bucho/n/n9e01660549a2?hl=en

The 7.7 billion yen profit (attributable to parent company) are good news, but better is the step from negative 50.5 billion yen to 7.7 billion yen profit = a one-year-step of 58.6 billion yen profit (= 14.6 billion yen in the average on a quarterly base).

If this pace will continue, the net profits (attributable to parent company) of the next six quarters will be:

Q3/26: 22.3 billion yen
Q4/26: 36.9 billion yen
Q1/27: 51.5 billion yen
Q2/27: 66.1 billion yen
Q3/27: 80.7 billion yen
Q4/27: 95.3 billion yen

If we add the 4 net profits (attributable to parent company) of 2027, we get a net profit (attributable to parent company) for 2027 of 293.6 billion yen. If we divided this amount through the 2.15 billion shares = 136.56 net profit (attributable to parent company)  for a share in 2027. This are by a P/E of 15 a share price of 2048 yen – more than the 2.5-fold of today.

The severe losses from 2021 through 2025 were heavily driven by massive capital expenditures required to build out the infrastructure for Rakuten Mobile. The overarching development highlights a steep curve down followed by a strong structural recovery:

Fiscal Period Net Income / Loss Status Key Drivers of Development

FY2023§ -2.41 Billion USD loss Peak infrastructure spend and heavy customer-acquisition costs for the mobile network launch.

FY2024§ -1.07 Billion USD loss Loss narrowed significantly due to initial mobile cost-cutting and strong e-commerce gains.

FY2025§ -1.19 Billion USD loss Steady losses persisted, but core ecosystem segments achieved record operating margins.

Q1 2026 -18.6 Billion JPY(= $0.12 billion loss Seasonally typical slow start, though FinTech segment profit rose 33.8% YoY.

Q2 2026 +7.7 Billion JPY(=$0.05 billion) profit First profitable quarter in six years. Total net turnaround of 58.7 billion yen year-over-year.

Turning point for Rakuten

12.09.26 11:11
After years of losses, Q2 2026 brought a quarterly profit for the first time in six years. The drivers are seen as lower mobile costs, 10.75 million customers, higher ecosystem usage, and profitable FinTech activities. Optimistic investors are using profit forecasts to set a price target of around 2,048 yen; further potential is attributed to Rakuten Symphony, Open RAN, and AI.
