T-Online, Ericsson & Nokia soweit unten sind.

Also hurting the telecom sector was Qualcomm (QCOM), a big player in the rollout of third-generation technology to speed wireless transmission of data and speech. The company told the Financial Times the introduction of that next technology won't be commercially viable in Europe until late 2004. Previous estimates were 2002. Qualcomm lost a staggering 25%.

Cell-phone and chip maker Motorola added to the dirge by saying it expects to lose money this quarter. Motorola blamed "significant weakness in first-quarter order input across its business segments." The company reduced its estimate of global handset sales this year by about 5% to below 500 million and threw out its January projection of earnings of 12 cents a share. Motorola's shares fell 5%.

Bye Motorola........cya next year in my portfolio (or better not)

Motorola Inc. said it will fall short of already reduced first-quarter sales and earnings forecasts, amid weak orders for its wireless phones and equipment, and warned it could post a loss from operations if the current pattern continues.

Motorola (MOT) on Friday said it doesn't expect to meet the guidance it offered last month for first-quarter earnings of 12 cents a share on sales of $8.8 billion. It didn't offer specific revised projections.

Motorola posted earnings, excluding items, of 59 cents a diluted share, on sales of $8.77 billion, for the first quarter ended April 1, 2000.

The company cited significant weakness in first-quarter order input across its business segments, caused by the sluggish U.S. economy and inventory corrections taking place in technology markets world-wide.

Motorola, the world's second-largest cellphone handset maker, also produces cable set-top boxes, wireless communications infrastructure equipment and semiconductors.
