SK Innovation joined hands with Canada's Nano One Materials to secure cathode material technology, a key material for batteries.
According to the industry on the 14th, SK Innovation will cooperate with NanoOne Materials to develop cathode materials. The cathode material is one of the four major elements of the battery along with the anode material, electrolyte, and separator. The capacity and output depend on what material it is composed of. In general, the higher the nickel specificity, the longer the driving distance and the higher the instability.
SK Innovation is expected to secure cathode material technology and strengthen battery competitiveness through cooperation with Nanoone Materials.
NanoOne Materials is a leading company that has developed various cathode materials such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP), nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC). Recently, a battery prototype using lithium, nickel, manganese (LNM) cathode materials was introduced and attracted attention. It is known that the voltage of the prototype that applied the independently developed One-Pot process is 25% higher than that of the existing battery. Safety was secured by repeating charging and discharging for 900 times.
NanoOne Materials also holds a process patent that eliminates the coating process in the cathode material manufacturing stage. By eliminating the coating step, costs were reduced and waste generation was minimized. The possibility of cooperation with Tesla has been raised as a technology that is eco-friendly and can save production costs. German automaker Volkswagen and Chinese battery material company Pulead Technology Industry are also collaborating in the field of electric vehicles and batteries.
With the advent of the electric vehicle era, the importance of cathode materials, which are closely related to vehicle performance, is growing more than ever. SK Innovation developed the world's first NCM622 in 2012 and successfully commercialized NCM811 in 2018.
It is also making efforts to procure cathode materials by signing successive supply contracts. In February, it was decided to supply high-performance battery cathode materials from Ecopro BM in Korea for four years. The transaction amount is 2,741.3 billion won, and Ecopro BM builds a cathode material plant in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, and produces orders from SK Innovation.
