News of July 24, 2013
Continental and Centurion, now Chinese, will be the first offering a full diesel range.
If not done yet, go to AVweb and read www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/...Aircraft-Engines220183-1.html
Continental Motors, owned by State-owned AVIC of China, has purchased the assets of the Thielert Motoren firm which was operated under judiciary administration (European equivalent of Chapter 11) under the name of Centurion Aero.
Suddenly, the ancient and reputable US firm selling and servicing piston engines worldwide can now offer diesel powers from 135 to 230HP, very soon the 310-350HP V8 4-liter Thielert, and soon after an extension to 6 cylinder of the SMA-based 4 cylinder O-305, which would be sized around 7.5 to 8 liters. Furthermore, Continental seems committed to soon offer worldwide customer service for the whole range, and is confident that aero diesel will equip 25% of all piston-engined aircraft within 5 years, this being due mainly to the formidable take-off of Chinese production and market. I am a bit less optimistic because I am familiar with Chinese delays but the intent is there, and it makes sense. Through Thielert, Continental controls the STCs obtained for the 4 cylinder (Cessna, Piper...), the OEM applications (Robin Ecoflyer), and the STC obtained for the V8 (Cessna, Cirrus SR22.)
We read elsewhere that Continental will in the very short term boost the Drone engine production which seems to be, before purchase, Centurion's main source of cash flow.
Continental confirmed that after assessing Centurion's record with its present customers in upholding the 300 hour TBR for gear system, they expect to be soon offering 600 hours. As for the 4-cyl. engines, the best achieved was 1,500 hours.
However there will be competition for AVIC's engines in China. Sunward Group goes ons supporting DeltaHawk's well known development in the 2-stroke field.
