Erste Stammzelltherapie in den USA

Washington - In den USA haben Ärzte einen teilweise gelähmten Patienten mit embryonalen Stammzellen behandelt. Die Phase-I-Studie sei die weltweit erste dieser Art, teilte das Biotech-Unternehmen Geron mit. Einem Patienten mit Rückenmarkverletzung waren in einer Klinik im US-Staat Atlanta Millionen Stammzellen gespritzt worden.

Die verwendeten Zellen stammen von menschlichen Embryonen, die nach einer künstlichen Befruchtung übrig geblieben waren. Durch Veränderung wurden sie zu Vorläufern von Nervenzellen; sie sollen die geschädigten Zellen reparieren. Der Versuch diene zunächst dazu, die Sicherheit und Verträglichkeit der Methode zu prüfen, so Geron.

Die Stammzelltherapie könne innerhalb von 14 Tagen nach der Verletzung begonnen werden. Über den Ausgang der Studie wurde noch nichts bekannt. Als eine Gefahr beim Einsatz embryonaler Stammzellen sehen Experten die Entwicklung von Krebs.

In the six months since scientists announced they had infused a drug made from human embryonic stem cells into a partially paralyzed patient’s spine, the identity of the recipient has been shrouded in secrecy.

Recently, rumors began circulating in Internet chat rooms that details about the closely guarded experiment were finally about to be revealed.

Now, a 21-year-old Alabama nursing student who was paralyzed from the chest down in a car crash in September has come forward to identify himself as the volunteer.

“I was the first patient,” Timothy J. Atchison of Chatom, Ala., said in a telephone interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday evening. “I’m doing well.”

Atchison, known as T.J. to his family and friends, was a student at the University of South Alabama College of Nursing when his car crashed on Sept. 25, which, Atchison noted, was the birthday of Christopher Reeve, the actor who suffered a devastating spinal cord injury.

After undergoing emergency treatment at a regional medical center, Atchison was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which specializes in spinal cord injuries, for rehabilitation. It was there that he agreed to let doctors inject him with the drug — more than 2 million cells made from stem cells into his spine, he said.

“I feel really good about everything,” Atchison said. “I’ve got a positive attitude. I’m trying to live life to the fullest right now.”

habe ich auch schon länger im Auge, halte es aber für sinnvoll die Marktstabilisierung abzuwarten.

Die Aktie ist im Moment zu sehr an den Gesamtmarkteinsturz gebunden.

Sehe hier aber auf lange Sicht eine sehr positive Entwicklung.

Last but not least is Geron (GERN). Geron was the first company to receive FDA approval for an embryonic stem cell treatment which is for spinal injuries. The object of the trial is to rebuild myelin around the spine that was damaged from injury and therefore caused paralysis. With myelin rebuilt, the region that is lower from the injury site should be able to regain the ability to receive electrical impulses again thus reversing paralysis.

So far there are four patients receiving the minimum dose. There have been no side effects or safety concerns in any patient. The company hopes to expand this trial to cervical injuries as the FDA has only given the green light to treat thoracic injuries right now. Cervical injuries are more common than thoracic injuries so Geron hopes by getting the go ahead to treat cervical patients it can enroll more patients at a quicker pace. Geron also believes that the same cells used in this trial have the potential to also treat Alzheimer’s, Canavan Disease, Transverse Myelitis, and Multiple Sclerosis.

Geron is not just a stem cell company. It has a huge oncology program as well that is in phase 2. At a recent conference the company said it will present a robust data package of the entire program in 2012 and look to bring the entire program into phase 3 shortly after the presentation of the phase 2 data which you can listen to here.

In this oncology program, besides the main drug Imetelstat Sodium, which is a telomerase inhibitor, is GRN1005. GRN1005 is used to pass the BBB (blood brain barrier). The brain has natural defenses to keep out unwanted agents. Unfortunately medicine is an unwanted agent to the body. GRN1005 is in a combo phase 1 and 2 trial. So far encouraging results have been seen. There is a 20% response rate using GRN1005 compared to the 2-6% response rate seen from current drugs on the market targeting brain metastases. Since brain cancer treatment is a huge unmet need, the company hopes it can bring this drug as a fast track after phase 2.

monaten hat mich ein typ aus singapur angerufen und mir diese aktie zum kauf empfohlen... (er habe insiderinfo, dass die kiste bald von einem grossen geschluckt werde) und mir mindestens 2-300% gewinn (ziel sei angeblich 8-12$/ps) prophezeit in den kommenden 6 monaten, die sind noch nicht um...
ich hab dann abgelehnt da ich prinzipiell nicht in unternehmen investiere, welche keinen umsatz generieren, auch sind die risiken bei pharma enorm und die entwicklung dauert ewig bis zur zulassung. trotzdem fand ich aber das handelsvolumen in den usa doch beachtlich... und deshalb beobachte seitdem die aktie.

heute hat sie ihr prestige-research projekt eingestampft, eigentlich wollte sie als pioneer in der stamm-zellen-forschung eingehen, wegen finanzieller engpässe und vor allem wegen erfolgslosigkeit bei den test-personen.

ich werde sie weiter im auge behalten, ist jedoch wirklich mit vorsicht zu geniessen...

Beobachten tu ich die auch schon länger. Sehr interessante Firma.

Ich bin allerdings wegen der Patente um eine "schonende" Stammzellengenerierung bei ACTC gelandet. Ich bin zwar noch nicht in GERON investiert, aber aus dem Rennen sind die noch lange nicht.

Ich hoffe nur, dass die Republikaner in den USA nicht an die Macht kommen. Sonst Beginnt für die Stammzellenforschung wieder das "Mittelalter".

jedenfalls erst mal raus... jetzt muss sie sich beweisen mit den produkten in der pipeline... sonst leutet hier ganz schnell der penny-stock alarm... 50 mio im jahr verbraten ohne resultate funktioniert nicht noch einmal 10 jahre...

Die Geron Aktie liefert heute ein glasklares Kaufsignal mit dem Ausbruch über die Marke von 1,50 $. Die Aktie besitzt oberhalb davon nunmehr Kurspotenzial bis 1,75 und darüber bis circa 1,89 $. Das Tal der Tränen könnte daher nach dem Allzeittief von Anfang Juni bei 1,25 $ durchschritten sein.

Kurse unterhalb von 1,50 $ und insbesondere unter 1,40 $ verschlechtern hingegen wieder die Kursaussichten der Aktie. Verluste bis 1,25 $ und ggf. tiefer bis zur runden 1,00-$-Marke erscheinen dann wiederum durchaus möglich.
