Chinese-based travel company Ctrip.com (NASDAQ:CTRP) CTRP escaped through the recent market correction with just a 37% loss.

That's more than you'd usually want to see.

But as the Nasdaq sank 25% in that correction, Ctrip's slump wasn't too bad.  When the broad market corrects, a leading stock can fall 21/2 times as much as the index. By this math, one could accept a 62.5% correction in a cup base.  That's the theory. We still prefer shallower cups. They are all the more impressive in that they weathered the storm better than many of their peers.  Ctrip lets its customers book their trips online.  By gathering hotel and flight deals across China, as well as international flights that originate in China, the company usually acts as an agent for its customers.

In this way, Ctrip looks much like Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE) EXPE.  In another way, it looks like China Mobile CHL, China Life Insurance LFC or Baidu.com (NASDAQ:BIDU) BIDU. It's thriving on the country's recent embrace of the free-market system, and the wealth that comes with such a shift.

What does a fast-booming middle class want? Cell phones, life insurance, online searches and travel, to name a few things.  Annually, Ctrip turned the profit corner in 2003.

It has been lifting its bottom line since. That growth hit 70% last year.  One concern is those gains are slowing.

Views for '08 are for 14%.  It's still early, and full-year views for Chinese companies can swing wildly.

But we'd much rather see higher numbers than that.  As for the stock's 37% decline, we note it has recouped more than half of that loss.  And the stock is attracting some accumulation in its base, a sign that institutions are buying

10.Januar....CLSA's Elinor Leung lowered her investment rating on Ctrip to Underperform -- the equivalent of a sell rating -- and set a $43.50 price target.

Leung attributed the downgrade to margins which could possibly drop from 25 to 20 percent. Although the CLSA analyst said she expects fourth-quarter results to be “robust,” Leung warned of risks heading into 2014....

und jetzt dieselbe Analystin mit Kehrtwendung und Kursziel $72,5 verkündet Kursexplosion
China’s overseas travel industry is set to explode in the next five years, according to Asia-based broker CLSA, which estimates that Chinese outbound tourists will grow from 83 million in 2012 to 200 million in 2020.
We compare Ctrip with leading global online-travel agents to analyse the long-term margin potential. Expedia Inc (EXPE) and Priceline are the top two global online travel agents with similar gross-hotel bookings (US$30bn), but Priceline generates much stronger growth and wider margins than Expedia, benefiting from international expansion.

Priceline only has an 11% market share in the USA, but it dominates the European market and benefits from the fast-growing market in Asia. The company generated 82% of its revenue from international markets.

Ctrip has room for margin expansion:
Ctrip shares similar growth and operating drivers as Priceline. Priceline could provide some insight into Ctrip’s margin potential. The US company generated a 36% non-GAAP operating margin in 2012. Ctrip’s sustainable non-GAAP operating margin could be 15% lower than Priceline’s, which implies about a 30% non-GAAP margin. Ctrip’s non-GAAP margin was only 24.7% in 2Q13. If Ctrip could better monetise its leisure products and accelerate the top line, there is room for further margin expansion.

CLSA’s target price for Ctrip is $72.5. Ctrip closed at $40.6 on Friday.

A Breakthrough In SEC vs Big Four

29.01.14 13:41
#17
The SEC and Deloitte‘s Chinese unit have resolved a more than two-year-old legal dispute over access to audit work papers in connection with a fraud investigation into Longtop Financial Technologies, a Chinese company.

The settlement over Longtop Financial Technologies is a break-through and could ultimately lead to a resolution between U.S. and China over auditing papers, said Citi analysts Muzhi Li, Ravi Sarathy and Gregory Zhao:

The latest development should restore investors’ confidence in these stocks. Therefore, we anticipate a rebound of their stock prices. We also think the move would lead to a final resolution between the SEC and CSRC to jointly audit Chinese listcos, and have them subject to the US securities regulations.

Morgan Stanley analysts Philip Wan and Timothy Chan commented the share pullbacks offer buying opportunities and we should buy into companies with either potential earnings upside or a long-term positive outlook:
We believe the share price weakness offers buying opportunities.

We identify companies with potential earnings upside (i.e., YY, New Oriental, and Dangdang) and category leaders with near-term margin uncertainties but a positive longer-term outlook (i.e., Baidu and Ctrip).....
Ctrip plans to turn more aggressive in market share expansion and is willing to give up margins if necessary. Although we expect margins in 2014 to come under pressure as a result of this expansion, given the intensifying competition we believe it is the right thing for Ctrip to do in order to strengthen its market position in the long run.

Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU), the leader in Chinese mobile user traffic at 54 percent share, stands to benefit significantly “from the rising O2O advertising demand, considering its large base of SME advertisers, and the strong map service,” said Mubayi.

The Goldman analyst believes Ctrip (NASDAQ: CTRP) and Qunar (NASDAQ: QUNR) will benefit in the transaction variety of the O2O segment. Mubayi sees these companies focusing on in-app purchases and having “comprehensive vertical websites that add significant value to customers' travel planning,” for example.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group is presently in discussions with online travel service provider Ctrip (Nasdaq: CTRP) regarding a possible Alibaba investment in the company.

According to an investment industry source, Ctrip CEO James Liang favors an independent development path for Ctrip, and even if Alibaba were to invest in Ctrip, the deal would be purely financial in nature, helping to push up Alibaba's IPO valuation...
