Ezenia! Inc. Announces 2004 Second Quarter Financial Results

BURLINGTON, Mass., Aug 16, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Ezenia! Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: EZEN.OB), a leading provider of real-time collaboration solutions for corporate and government networks and eBusiness, today reported its operating results for its second quarter and six month period ended June 30, 2004.
The Company generated revenue of $2.5 million for the second quarter of 2004, compared to $2.1 million for the corresponding period in the previous year. For the six months ended June 30, 2004, reported revenues were $5.1 million, as compared with $4.5 million for the six months ended June 30, 2003.
Net income for the quarter and six month period ended June 30, 2004 was $1.1 million or $0.08 per share, and $1.5 million or $0.11 per share, respectively, compared to a reported net loss for the quarter and six-month period ended June 30, 2003 of $644 thousand ($0.05 per share) and $766 thousand ($0.06 per share), respectively.
"We are pleased to report our third consecutive quarter of profitability and are encouraged by the positive trends in our business," noted Khoa Nguyen, Ezenia! Chairman and CEO. "We believe our positive results are indicative of the growing demand for the InfoWorkSpace product line, with a 21% increase in reported revenues for the second quarter of 2004 over the same period last year, and a 46% increase in the six-month period year over year. Margins on sales in the second quarter of 2004 grew to 64.6% compared to 44.2% in the same quarter of the prior year, and increased to 62.3% in the six-month period ending June 30, 2004 as compared to 55.1% for the six months ending June 30, 2003. These increases are especially encouraging as the sale of the legacy video conferencing equipment continues to decline from approximately $1.3 million in the first six months of 2003 to approximately $400 thousand in the first six months of this year."
"As a result of our continuing focus on cost control, quarterly operating expenses declined to approximately $1.2 million in the second quarter of 2004 compared with approximately $1.6 million in the same period last year. Operating expenses declined to approximately $2.4 million from approximately $3.2 million for the periods ending June 30, 2004 and 2003 respectively."
Mr. Nguyen further remarked, "Strong revenues, continued vigilance on expense control and management of accounts receivable, and the receipt of approximately $706 thousand in cash, net of interest, taxes, and approximately $179 thousand in fees, from a settlement reached with the Israeli Tax Commission, resulted in the company closing the quarter with total cash of $4.3 million. The road ahead still remains very challenging, however, the improved financial condition of Ezenia! will allow us to face these challenges with less severe constraints than the Company has endured over the past year. We believe in our long-term plan with the InfoWorkSpace product and continue to execute our strategy faithfully."
