Dow Jones Newswires:
Westinghouse, Cameco, Brookfield Partner U.S. Government to Build at Least $80B of Nuclear Reactors
At least $80 billion of new nuclear reactors will be constructed across the U.S. under a new partnership formed between the U.S. government, Westinghouse Electric, Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management.
The strategic collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of nuclear power, in accordance with the executive orders issued by President Trump in May, the parties said in a statement Tuesday.
The announcement comes as the boom in artificial intelligence and data centers creates ever growing demand for energy to develop technological advantages increasingly viewed as key to countries' national security.
The agreement is in line with U.S. efforts to maintain global leadership in nuclear power development and AI, they said.
"This historic partnership supports our national security objectives and enhances our critical infrastructure," said U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
"President Trump promised a renaissance of nuclear power, and now he is delivering," added Chris Wright, secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy.
The reactors will be built using Westinghouse technology, and generate power for data center and computing capacity.
