Consumer sentiment faltered slightly in late May, but consumers were more upbeat than they were in April, according to media reports of research at the University of Michigan. The UMich final May consumer sentiment index rose to 92.1 from 86.0 in April, down from 93.2 in the preliminary reading in mid-May. The current situation index fell to 93.2 in late May from 96.4 in April and 94.1 in mid-May. The expectations index rose to 91.4 from 79.3 in April, but dipped from 92.7 in mid-May. Other consumer attitude surveys showed a burst of euphoria after the war, followed by a slight decline in confidence in the current economy. However, consumers are getting more upbeat about the future.
