European Patent proves Dyesol a world leader in DSC
Dyesol has been granted a European Patent over the structure of the Dyesol DSC tile – a multi cell Dye
Solar Cell device which produces electricity even in low light conditions and which potentially can
generate electricity to power any building.
Mrs Sylvia Tulloch, Managing Director of Dyesol, confirms that the patent application (entitled
‘Methods to implement interconnects in multi-cell regenerative photovoltaic photoelectrochemical
devices’) was filed on 17 March 2000, drawing its priority date from an Australian patent filed on 18
March 1999.
“Many organisations now developing DSC products did not even exist at the time we initially filed our
applications - it takes a long time to achieve success with new technology on the world stage,” said Mrs
Tulloch.
“Early priority dates, such as for this patent, are a key element of Dyesol’s Patent Portfolio and are a
clear indicator of our experience, foresight and leadership in the field of DSC.”
The granting of a European patent over our energy generating tile takes Dyesol another step closer to
being able to establish manufacturing plants to produce the double glazing tile in large quantities for
use in buildings. While possibilities for those manufacturing plants throughout the world are being
investigated, Dyesol will continue to be a major supplier of componentry and chemicals to the world’s
researchers in Dye Solar Cell technology.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION for DYESOL Media Release
The Technology – DYE SOLAR CELLS
DSC technology can best be described as ‘artificial photosynthesis’ using an electrolyte, a layer of
titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass.
Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric
current many times stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants. Compared to
conventional silicon based photovoltaic technology, Dyesol’s technology has lower cost and embodied
energy in manufacture, it produces electricity more efficiently even in low light conditions and can be
directly incorporated into buildings by replacing conventional glass panels rather than taking up roof or
extra land area.
The Company – DYESOL Limited
Dyesol is located in Queanbeyan NSW (near Canberra) and in August 2005 was listed on the Australian
Stock Exchange (ASX Code ‘DYE”). Dyesol manufactures and supplies a range of Dye Solar Cell
products comprising equipment, chemicals, materials, components and related services to researchers
and manufacturers of DSC. The Company is playing a key role in taking this third generation solar
technology out of the laboratory and into the community.
