Universal Detection Technology Announces Breakthrough With Sensor Molecule in BSM-2000

Study Published in Journal of the American Chemical Society
LOS ANGELES, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Mar 21, 2007 -- Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTC BB:UDTT.OB - News), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies to protect people from bioterrorism and provider of counter-terrorism products and services, announced today that it has made a major breakthrough in the sensor molecule used in its BSM-2000 Anthrax Detection device. The improved sensor molecule will significantly improve the sensitivity of the BSM-2000.
The BSM-2000 previously utilized Terbium in the form of Terbium Chloride as a sensor molecule. The improved molecule, known as a macrocyclic ligand bonded to Terbium ion, basically acts as an exclusive binding site for dipicolinic acid (DPA) -- a unique biomarker of bacterial spores -- and eliminates the potential of the binding site being blocked by water molecules. The exclusion of water from the inner sphere of the molecule yields a significant improvement in the spore detection capability. A peer reviewed paper on the macrocyclic ligand was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

UDT has developed the BSM-2000 in cooperation with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is continuously working to improve the sensitivity and range of the device. The BSM-2000 is designed to continuously monitor the air for anthrax spores. If an increase in spore concentration is detected, the device sounds an alarm notifying the appropriate security and emergency services personnel.
"The development of the Terbium ligand not only greatly improves the sensitivity of our device but also puts on the path to having a reagent-free device," said Amir Ettehadieh, UDTT's director of research and development. "We hope that this will distinguish us from our competitors in the Biodetection field," he added.
In a recent piece NBC News covered Universal Detection Technology's automatic anthrax detection system, BSM-2000. That piece can be viewed at www.udetection.com/pressroom-video-NBC1006.htm.
