Und wieder werden die Arbeitslosenzahlen in den USA erhoeht,
diesmal durch Motorola. Hierbei zu beachten "worldwide" !
Motorola, the No. 2 maker of cellular telephones, said it will cut 4,000 semiconductor jobs worldwide, or 12% of its microchip workers, because demand has slowed. Motorola shares fell 4% to $19.01 on the news Friday.
Motorola, of Schaumburg, Ill., already has laid off temporary and contract workers, spokesman Ken Phillips said, and the company hopes to use attrition and voluntary and involuntary severance packages for the rest. The cuts are expected to continue into the second quarter, Phillips added.
The company has struggled with falling demand for its cell phones and semiconductors because a weakening economy has cooled sales and left Motorola's customers oversupplied.
The move comes on the heels of an announcement by its mobile phone unit that it was closing its last mobile phone manufacturing plant in the U.S. and cutting 2,500 jobs in a move to stay competitive.
Other measures will include a substantial reduction in capital spending and operating budgets and further business and manufacturing consolidations, the company's semiconductor unit said.
