Die US-Regierung hält laut Finanzminister Timothy Geithner ein Scheitern der ökonomisch brisanten Verhandlungen über den Haushalt für denkbar. Er sei bereit, das Land über die sogenannte Fiskalklippe gehen zu lassen, sollten die Republikaner sich weiter gegen Steuererhöhungen für Wohlhabende stemmen, sagte der von US-Präsident Barack OBAMA ernannte Verhandlungsführer am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) dem TV-Sender CNBC. Zudem lehnte das Weiße Haus ab, den aktuellen Streit mit der bald notwendigen erneuten Erhöhung der Schuldengrenze zu verknüpfen.

Die Regierung sei "absolut" darauf vorbereitet, die automatischen Haushaltskürzungen und umfassenden Steuererhöhungen in Höhe von 600 Milliarden Dollar (458 Milliarden Euro) zum Jahreswechsel in Kraft treten zu lassen, sagte Geithner. "Es gibt keine Perspektive für eine Einigung, in der die Steuerraten für die reichsten zwei Prozent nicht steigen." "Das Öl wird knapper, Kanada verfügt inzwischen über die drittgrößten Reserven nach Venezuela und Saudi-Arabien. Und China dürstet danach. Nun hat ein chinesischer Staatskonzern zugeschlagen.

Kanada hat China die Tür zu seinen Energiereserven geöffnet: Nach monatelangen hitzigen Debatten rang sich die Regierung in Ottawa dazu durch, die umgerechnet knapp zwölf Milliarden Euro (15 Milliarden Dollar) schwere Übernahme des heimischen Ölproduzenten Nexen durch den chinesischen Staatskonzern CNOOC zu genehmigen. Es ist der größte Zukauf eines Unternehmens aus der Volksrepublik im Ausland.

Damit erhält China Zugriff auf die kanadischen Ölsande, wo sich nach Saudi-Arabien und Venezuela die drittgrößten gesicherten Rohölvorkommen der Welt befinden. Die Nordamerikaner wiederum kommen an das benötigte ausländische Kapital zur Erschließung ihrer gewaltigen Ressourcen und bauen sich zugleich in Asien neben den USA eine zweite Stütze für ihre Energieexporte auf.

Das Geschäft wurde vom kanadischen Industrieminister zunächst gestoppt, bis Petronas zu weitreichenden Zugeständnissen bereit war"...

The conclusion based on economic law is that we have not seen anything yet. The balance sheets must balance and to accomplish that assets must equal liabilities. That is the foundational fact of what I have just told you. In time they will but the process is going to be Mayan calendar event of sorts.

This is why QE must continue to infinity which inherently also means debt must continue to infinity, or else.

Gold and silver may be preparing for lift off starting this week for two key reasons.

First, the Fed is scheduled to settle a major tranche of MBS purchases on Wednesday totaling roughly $55 billion on Wednesday. All else equal, this represents a 150% increase in the total balance sheet expansion of the Federal Reserve under QE3 to date occurring this week. And the Fed is scheduled to settle another set of purchases totaling over $30 billion early next week. Thus, a considerable liquidity tailwind from the Federal Reserve is set to begin blowing that could carry these metals higher through the remainder of the year, particularly as trading volumes begin to subside as we move toward the holidays.

Second, the Fed is widely anticipated to announce a major supplement to its existing QE3 program following its latest FOMC meeting, also on Wednesday. The Fed's current balance sheet neutral Operation Twist program, which includes the purchase of long-dated Treasuries in exchange for the sale of short-dated Treasuries, is set to expire at the end of the year. In its place, the Fed is expected to announce that it will commence outright purchases of U.S. Treasury securities at a rate of $40 billion to $45 billion per month in its place. In other words, QE3 may soon more than double from $40 billion to up to $85 billion in asset purchases per month. And the addition of outright Treasury purchases would coincide with the MBS purchase program finally getting up to full speed. Such a move would represent an enormous added tailwind for both gold and silver as we move into 2013.

If you fast forward 20 years until all the boomers are retired that soars to $202 trillion according to Boston University.

Britain will be downgraded if the budget deficit rises because of weak growth. And it will be downgraded if the government shows any sign of backsliding on its commitment to austerity. The message for George Osborne from the rating agency S&P was that he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Any temptation to feel sorry for the chancellor in these trying circumstances should be resisted. It was Osborne who turned the UK's AAA credit rating into a virility symbol in his early days at the Treasury when he was out to show what a tough guy he was. Now, unless something entirely unexpected happens in the next few months, he faces the very real threat that the people he has courted so assiduously will humiliate him with a debt downgrade.

WDH/US-Notenbank beschließt neue Käufe von Staatsanleihen

"WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Die US-Notenbank (Fed) hat ein neues [Rück!-]Kaufprogramm für Staatsanleihen beschlossen. Man wolle ab Januar jeden Monat für 45 Milliarden US-Dollar Staatsanleihen kaufen, um die lahmende Konjunktur zu stützen, teilte der geldpolitische Ausschuss (FOMC) am Mittwoch in Washington mit.

Mit dem neuen Programm wird ein auslaufendes Anleihentauschprogramm (Operation Twist) abgelöst. Zudem kauft die Fed bereits monatlich hypothekenbesicherte Wertpapiere (Mort[g!]age Backed Securites, MBS) im Wert von 40 Milliarden US-Dollar im Monat.
Dieses Programm soll fortgeführt werden.

Der US-Leitzins wurde am Mittwoch in der Spanne von null bis 0,25 Prozent belassen.
Der Leitzins soll "außergewöhnlich niedrig" bleiben, solange die Arbeitslosenquote über der Marke von 6,5 Prozent liegt und die Inflationsrate auf Sicht von einem bis zwei Jahren unter der Marke von 2,5 Prozent erwartet wird. /jsl/she".
