Dell’Oro Group predicted open RAN revenue would accelerate faster than it previously forecast, taking a share of between 15 per cent and 20 per cent of the global RAN market by 2027.

Open RAN Architecture Changes the Game

The next generation of cellular networks, 5G-Advanced, is set to be drastically different in terms of how the infrastructure is built and deployed. One of the most radical changes relates to how the architecture embraces virtualization and cloud-native features, with functionality implemented in software, such as with cloud-native network functions (CNFs). This is a stark departure from previous generations, in which virtualization and containerization did not form an integral part of the architecture. Cloud-native, in particular, is a key technology that will be used throughout 5G networks, from the mobile-access edge computing (MEC) to the core, including the Radio Access Network (RAN). A critical aspect of cloud-native is that it can use commodity hardware and run on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers, rather than having to use proprietary components, making it more cost-effective.

Open RAN pushes this concept even further, allowing for the 5G RAN to be built entirely on open and interoperable hardware and software solutions. In many ways, this means the design of 5G is opening up to new vendors outside of the traditional telco space that have virtualization expertise. Virtualized RAN is set to allow more flexibility through the ability to deploy, configure, and update network functionality fairly easily.

On April 18, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Takeaki Matsumoto announced his plan to allocate Rakuten Mobile’s platinum band in the fall of 2023.

As of April 2023, Rakuten Mobile has built a 4G LTE network only in the 1.7GHz band (band 3), but does not own bands from 700MHz to 900MHz. This band, called the platinum band, is more resistant to obstacles than radio waves in the 1.7 GHz band, and is said to be advantageous in expanding area coverage.

Regarding the platinum band, Rakuten Mobile President Shunsuke Yazawa also commented at the “Rakuten Mobile Partner Conference” event for business partners held in February, saying, “I would like to start the (platinum band) service at the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.” rice field.

Am 18. veröffentlichte ein Expertentreffen des Ministeriums für Inneres und Kommunikation einen Berichtsentwurf, in dem es heißt, dass dieses Band für Mobiltelefone verwendet werden kann. Innenminister Takeaki Matsumoto sagte: "Wir wollen im Herbst einen Auftrag erteilen."

Rakuten TV, the European streaming platform, has announced the launch of new owned and operated FAST channels. The company has now over 100 O&O channels in Europe, across multiple genres, such as Film, Documentary, Series and Kids.

Following the success of its branded Rakuten TV Film channels, with top Hollywood and Local movies, the company will now enter the TV Series landscape by launching a Reality/Factual Entertainment channel in the UK and Crime series channels in DACH, France, Italy and Spain.

Rakuten TV CEO, Cedric Dufour, commented: “FAST and AVoD currently represent a significant portion of our business, with healthy double digit YoY growth.
