NANOPHASE APPLAUDS WHITE HOUSE NANOTECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE        FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 04, 2000 11:49 AM
 - PRNewswire

BURR RIDGE, Ill., Feb 4, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The recent Clinton administration fiscal 2000 budget request, which includes a National Nanotechnology Initiative and increased funding for science and nanotechnology research, was noted by Nanophase Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq:NANX), a leader in nanomaterials and nanoengineered products, as an important step in the recognition of nanotechnology.
"We're excited to see nanotechnology recognized as a major technological frontier that has tremendous potential to enable the development of many materials and an array of new technologies," said Joseph Cross, president and CEO. "As one of the few publicly held corporations engaged in developing nano-solutions, we have been crusading for a broader recognition of the potential offered by advanced materials that deliver dramatically better performance and capabilities than ordinary materials.

"Our customers recognize the potential, and that is why we continue to see an increase in the number of development and manufacturing contracts for nanoengineered materials. It's gratifying to see a more global recognition of the importance of this technology. As a publicly held company, Nanophase presents individuals with one of the few opportunities to directly invest in this exciting opportunity. We feel positive about the strong lead we have in the field of nanoengineering, our increasing number of relationships with leading companies, and the quality and number of patents we have."
The National Nanotechnology Initiative The initiative was launched in late January with the following announcement: "The Administration is making this major new initiative, called the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), a top priority. The emerging fields of nanoscience and nanoengineering -- the ability to manipulate and move matter -- are leading to unprecedented understanding of the fundamental building blocks of all physical things. These developments are likely to change the way almost everything -- from vaccines to computers to automobile tires to objects not yet imagined -- is designed and made.... Nanotechnology is the new frontier and its potential impact is compelling. Some of the potential breakthroughs that may be possible include:
-- Making materials and products from the bottom-up, that is, by building
them up from atoms and molecules.  Bottom-up manufacturing should
      require less material and pollute less;
-- Developing materials that are 10 times stronger than steel, but a
fraction of the weight for making all kinds of land, sea, air and space

vehicles lighter and more fuel efficient." "It is interesting and perhaps prophetic that we are today manufacturing the very nanoengineered products that the Administration refers to as an exciting future possibility," said Cross. "We break materials down to their atomic level and then rearrange atoms to give them advanced properties. For instance, our ceramic process creates a material that is lighter and more durable than steel. While it's exciting to see our work called 'futuristic,' it also shows that a lot of people don't know about us. That means we have many opportunities to introduce our capabilities and technology to corporations around the world, and lead the drive to make these advanced materials reality, not science fiction."
Cross said that the Administration's initiative is supported by requests for additional federal funding for research. "I am not sure that as a publicly held, for-profit corporation, Nanophase could derive significant direct benefit from such funding, however, the indirect effects could be substantial," explained Cross. "More research and support could lead to greater visibility for nanotechnology, new discoveries, and more advanced education and training for the next generations of nanoengineers -- people we would be delighted to employ in the future. This visibility will also enlighten our future customers to the potential applications of nanomaterials in their markets."
Nanoengineering Update in Coatings, Catalysts, and Ceramics Nanophase's vision is to apply nanotechnology to help its customers develop advanced nanoengineered solutions that deliver a quantum leap in performance. Nanophase is currently focused on developing nano-solutions for three key markets: coatings, catalysts and ceramics. Additional market initiatives will be added during 2000.
The coatings market includes conductive applications for static and radiation protection, UV protection (UV resistance and filtering), abrasion resistance, and IR attenuating coatings. In each area, the company has established relationships with major customers for proprietary applications, including development and subsequent supply agreements, and has programs in progress across the spectrum from development to manufacturing.
Catalysts can deliver a number of superior properties from the intrinsic attributes of nanoparticles, for example small particle size and large surface area. The company has at least two significant efforts now under way, including a proprietary application for an environmental catalyst and one for a chemical catalyst, and is exploring other opportunities.
Ceramics, another market where Nano-particle size provides appreciable value, began to demonstrate considerable progress beginning in the second half of 1999. The company has completed testing of several proprietary Nano-formulations for the cutting tool market, and demonstrated significantly improved performance in laboratory testing. In partnership with a major ceramics manufacturer, Nanophase's development has been undergoing customer field trials.
Nanophase Continues to Win Patents, Trademarks In 1999, the company added significantly to its intellectual property base. The Japanese patent office granted a basic technology patent covering the method and apparatus for making nano-structured material, which protects the company's technology in this area. The U.S. Trademark and Patent Office has granted us registration for the NanoGard(R) trademark for health care products. The company also applied for registration of its NanoShield(TM) designation for various innovative protective coatings under development. The company also received notice that the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office allowed two patents covering surface modification of nanoparticles, which allows the company to tailor the surface chemistry of particles for a broad range of electronic, optical and chemical behavior. Currently, Nanophase owns or licenses over 20 U.S. and international patents covering a variety of manufacturing processes and engineered materials, and additional applications patents are pending.
"We are pleased that the potential power of nanotechnology is being more widely recognized, and we are excited about the opportunity that Nanophase has as one of the pioneers in this new technological frontier, " concluded Cross. "Perhaps the company has been somewhat ahead of its time, however, now we feel that we have reached a watershed moment in which the potential of advanced materials is widely recognized and accepted."
Nanophase Technologies Corporation provides engineered solutions utilizing nanocrystalline materials for a variety of industrial product applications. Using proprietary technology to produce nanocrystalline materials, the company creates products with unique performance attributes. The company's global customer base includes a number of Fortune 500 companies. Nanophase trades on the Nasdaq NMS under the symbol "NANX." Visit the company's web site at www.nanophase.com . March 6, 2000 chicago tribune

It might sound odd for a place that specializes in making
materials that are tinier than anything available
elsewhere, but the folks at Nanophase Technologies
Corp. in Burr Ridge are running out of space.

"We're running three shifts a day, five days a week," said
Joseph Cross, Nanophase's chief executive, "and we
just don't have room to add any more capacity."

According to Gina Kritchevsky, the firm's vice president
for technology, lab space is so tight that "some people
are building experiments in their offices."

So it will come with much relief in June when a new
facility in Romeoville opens to give Nanophase folks
some breathing room. The firm faces a daunting
challenge because of its unique position in a market
where most potential customers have no idea what it
does.

Nanophase has pioneered technology that produces
particles so tiny they have different properties than the
same material rendered in somewhat larger proportions.

For example, zinc oxide at the nanoscale is still an
excellent sun block, but the individual particles are so
small they're invisible. Thus, when you rub some
nano-sized zinc oxide on your nose, besides avoiding
sunburn you avoid the indignity of walking around with a
nose covered with white goo.

Applications for nanomaterials are seemingly endless.
They range from new ways to deliver medicines and
cheaper chemical catalysts to ultrastrong invisible
coatings to resist abrasions.

In recent years nanotechnology has been a booming field
in university labs across the country, but Nanophase
appears to be the only commercial operation where
these materials are produced by the ton.

While being an industry leader is great, the downside is
that you have to create a market all by yourself. That
may be changing, though, thanks to a boost from an
unexpected direction.

In his proposed budget, President Clinton has asked
Congress to fund a national nanotechnology initiative.
That action by itself has sparked considerable interest in
this field, said Cross, and it promises other benefits.

"We won't directly get any federal money, but we should
benefit from the educational efforts," he said. Nanophase
is working on several of its own initiatives to trim
production costs as well as expand its range of
products, said Kritchevsky.

"We want to add more value to our products," she said.
"Instead of just preparing dry particles to ship to a
customer, we'll be doing more, such as producing a
coating that we can ship ready to use."

After years of losing money as a start-up, Cross said
Nanophase is becoming a full-fledged industrial firm that
should be turning a profit by this year's fourth quarter.

und dann guckt Euch mal bei onvista die Gewinnprognose an!von minus auf o,84plus in diesem Jahr.Allerdings hat die Firma dies nachträglich richtiggestellt und auf 2001 verwiesen

Take a look at Nanophase Technologies (NANX: news, msgs), says one investor. The Illinois company develops materials that it says are 10 times stronger than steel but a fraction of the weight. (See stock chart.) "There has been almost no media coverage about this developing field of technology ... that might be able to revolutionize other technologies like fiber-optic systems or semiconductors," Friedemann Diederichs tells me.

biz.yahoo.com/prnews/000229/il_nanopha_1.html``Nanophase, we believe, is at the forefront of a technology that is emerging on a global scale. Nanotechnology is being increasingly demonstrated as a platform technology for the future with a surprisingly broad range of enabling applications across multiple markets. Our new business model, which is designed to provide nano-based solutions to lead customers in focus markets, produced successful results during 1999 and into 2000, and also allowed the company to reduce time-to-market by an average of six months. We have increased our intellectual property, which is a major company goal, and augmented our R&D and process engineering staff to accelerate product development. We fully expect to grow our intellectual property base during 2000 along with revenue.''

In 1999, the company achieved the following milestones:

   -- Increased intellectual property:
      1. The Japanese patent office granted the company a basic technology
patent in this important market area covering its method and
apparatus for making nanostructured material and protecting the
         company's technology.
      2. The U.S. Trademark and Patent Office granted Nanophase registration
for its "NanoGard" trademark for healthcare products.
      3. Filed additional patent applications relating to transparent
         conductive films.
      4. Applied for registration of its "NanoShield" trademark for its
         innovative protective coatings
      5. The U.S. Trademark and Patent Office granted the company's patent
covering surface modification of nano particles, which allows the
company to tailor the surface chemistry of particles for a broad
variety of electronic, optical and chemical behavior.

-- Rebuilt the management team at the officer and manager level while
restructuring and reskilling over 30% of the company.
-- Significantly improved the company's business model to drive product
introduction acceptance, reduce time-to-market, and gain intellectual
      property in focus markets.
-- Successfully prepared and completed all Y2K activities.
-- Identified and developed focus markets and positioned over $3 million
      in new business for 2000.
-- Achieved sequential quarterly revenue growth throughout the year -- Q4
      grew 25% compared to Q1.
-- Recruited technical talent to augment the company's initiatives in R&D
      and nanotechnology development.

Nanophase Receives Continuing Certification Under ISO 9001

Nanophase successfully completed its continuing certification audit under its ISO 9001 program, which has been in existence since 1997. The company manufactures its products in full compliance with ISO 9001, as well as manufacturing USP purity under GMP conditions for various healthcare applications. ``This is yet another important step for Nanophase since it provides us a continuing competitive advantage as we expand our products into the healthcare market,'' stated Cross. ``Also, as we introduce our products into additional markets, large customers demand integrated quality systems and manufacturing disciplines that are central to the core of Nanophase. This, again, is a major competitive advantage as we enter new markets and work with Fortune 500 companies.''

Nanophase will host a quarterly conference call on February 16 at 10:00 am CST, which will be broadcast on the Internet by Vcall. For information on how to ``attend'' this virtual conference call, log in at www.vcall.com .

Was ist Nanotechnologie?

Emerging field of nanotechnology may redefine frontiers of science
BY MARK SPENCER Daily Herald Business Writer
If the word "nanotechnology" is not in your vocabulary yet, it may be time to take note.
The scientific lingo for the restructuring of materials at their atomic and molecular level is beginning to get mainstream public attention as more people are grasping the possibilities for manipulating the roots of matter.

Some scientists call the emerging field of nanotechnology one of the leading new scientific frontiers for this century, with broad applications across countless industries. The term refers to the minute scale of the materials, with a nanometer equaling one-billionth of a meter.

It's a small company in suburban Chicago that may be on the leading edge of transforming nanotechnology from laboratory experiments into useful compounds mass produced for manufacturers to improve their products.

Nanophase Technologies Corp.'s compounds are already being used in applications ranging from making floor coatings thin and tough, to making sunscreen apply more smoothly.

Nanophase, an outgrowth of a 1980s research initiative at Argonne National Laboratory, has toiled as a research firm since its founding in 1989. Ten years ago, the company could only produce a few grams of its nanocrystalline powders a day at costs exceeding $1,000 per gram.

Since then, it has reduced costs to, in some instances, pennies a gram. These days, large drums of aluminum oxide and other ultra-fine nanoengineered powders are moved to the shipping dock each day at the small manufacturing plant hidden away in a Burr Ridge business park.

The only customer the company has ever made public is Schering-Plough Corp.'s Dr. Scholl's brand, which uses Nanophase zinc oxide because it is less likely to clog an aerosol can. The zinc oxide - with particles so small they are transparent - is used in sunscreen to eliminate that chalky residue sunbathers hate.

Nanophase's products also make their way into scratch-resistant coatings used, for instance, on floors. With fewer atoms in the nano-product, the coating is less dense, just 40 nanometers thick.

"When you are making something that small, it's smaller than a wavelength of light, so it becomes invisible," said Daniel S. Bilicki, vice president of sales and marketing for Nanophase.

The company went public in November 1997 and saw its stock sag after strong initial interest. After trading at less than $3 a share for more than a year, the share price began climbing in December.

President Clinton then announced in January his National Nanotechnology Initiative, including $500 million for nanotechnology research and education in his 2000 fiscal budget.

"Imagine the possibilities: Materials with 10 times the strength of steel and only a small fraction of the weight, shrinking all the information housed at the Library of Congress into a device the size of a sugar cube," Clinton said at the California Institute of Technology when announcing the plan.

Since then, Nanophase's stock has tripled in value. But executives at Nanophase hesitate giving Clinton all the credit.

President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph E. Cross was brought in about a year ago to take the company from a research mindset into production mode. He expects the company will turn its first profit by the end of next year.

Cross said he joined Nanophase because its long-term prospects include countless applications.

"There are a lot of one-trick ponies," Cross said. "If you make it big on a one-trick pony you soon saturate the market."

Cross says he cannot think of an industry that could not benefit from nanoengineering.

He has built a leadership team and a business plan aimed at developing marketable products easily tweaked for other uses.

The number of patented "reactors" the company uses to superheat metals, vaporizing them into their elemental particles and condensing them using reactive gases, has grown from six when Cross arrived in November 1998 to more than two dozen today.

"We're moving toward serious production capability," said Bilicki, the head of sales and marketing. "We're probably the only company that can deliver ton-type materials instead of kilos."

With no room left for more reactors in its 20,000-square-foot headquarters, Nanophase is negotiating a lease on a former chemical company building in Romeoville that is twice the size. The company plans to keep both buildings.

NANOPHASE TECHNOLOGIES ACHIEVES FIRST QUARTER REVENUE GROWTH GOAL
        TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 2000 4:31 PM
 - PRNewswire

BURR RIDGE, Ill., Apr 18, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Nanophase Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq:NANX), a leader in nanomaterials and nanoengineered products, today announced that it had reached its first quarter 2000 revenue growth goal towards the company's 2000 target of tripling revenue from 1999. Preliminary figures indicate that the company shipped approximately $619,000, representing a 90 percent increase compared with the first quarter of 1999, and 53 percent sequential quarterly growth compared with the fourth quarter of 1999. First quarter 2000 revenue also equates to approximately 43 percent of the company's entire 1999 revenue.

"We are satisfied to have hit our first quarter's revenue growth target as a benchmark of progress toward our goal of tripling revenue this year from our 1999 results," stated Joseph Cross, Nanophase's president and CEO. "This is an achievement on two fronts: business development and sales to create the customer opportunities, and manufacturing scale-up as we increase capacity, personnel, and output on a multi-shift basis. Over the past two quarters, we have focused on strengthening our production management, processes, and infrastructure to improve the total supply chain and predictability. The Nanophase team has performed extraordinarily well during this scale-up and we expect continued scale-up activities, as well as reduced manufacturing cost, beginning the second and through the third quarter."

Cross continued: "While customer changes are always possible, at this point in time, the company has supply agreements and purchase orders in place, and customer commitments for approximately 70 percent of its revenue targets for 2000 and about 40 percent for revenue targets in 2001 with several opportunities still under development. Without minimizing the amount of work still before us to attain our objectives, we remain comfortable with our 2000 revenue goals."

Nanophase will release full financial results on April 27, 2000, followed by its quarterly conference call on April 28 at 10:00 CST. The call will also be broadcast on Vcall. For information on how to "attend" this virtual conference call, log in at www.vcall.com .
