A HUGE oil discovery has been made in the Falklands, sources claimed last night.
The find, by a British-backed company, could contain up to a BILLION barrels of “black gold” an insider revealed.
The strike, off the Falklands’ southern coast, was made by oil explorer Borders and Southern.
It has been tight-lipped about the discovery — but shares have soared on growing rumours. Borders was unavailable for comment last night but Foreign Office officials refused to deny the news.
The latest find follows an earlier strike north of the Falklands two years ago. And news of it will infuriate Argentina, which lays claim to the islands — and has already barred from its ports ships bearing the Falklands flag or associated with oil exploration
Falkland Oil & Gas (LON:FOGL) pushed 5% to 98p during afternoon trading, albeit on thin volume, but it was still enough to push the stock to a new 52 week high. The company is not due to start drilling on its Loligo licence until June, so the move higher today is a little puzzling. The next snippet of news from the troubled waters is expected from Borders & Southern (LON:BOR) on the testing of a sample from its recent drilling. If they had a High Pressure Transport Canister on site this could take as little as 3 weeks, if on the other hand they had to fly one in, we could be looking at up to 6 weeks for results.

Der Krieg um die Falklandinseln belastet bis heute die Beziehungen zwischen Großbritannien und Argentinien. Vielleicht ändert eine Klarstellung etwas daran. Die betroffenen Bewohner sollen in Kürze selbst entscheiden, zu wem sie gehören.
Die Bewohner der Falklandinseln im südlichen Atlantik sollen in einer Volksabstimmung entscheiden, ob sie weiter zu Großbritannien gehören wollen. Das hat die Regierung der Insel angekündigt. Damit soll der seit Jahren schwelende Streit mit Argentinien beigelegt werden, das die Inseln für sich beansprucht. Die Abstimmung soll in der ersten Hälfte des kommenden Jahres stattfinden.
Man hoffe, das Referendum werde 30 Jahre nach dem Ende des Falklandkrieges eine deutliche Nachricht an Argentinien senden, dass die Bewohner britisch bleiben wollten, hieß es seitens der Regierung. Gavin Short, Vorsitzender der Gesetzgebenden Versammlung, erklärte: "Wir wollen diese Volksabstimmung nicht, weil wir daran zweifeln, wer wir sind. Ich glaube, dass sich die Bewohner der Falklandinseln wünschen, dass wir ein autonomes Überseegebiet von Großbritannien bleiben. Wir wollen sicher nicht von der Regierung in Buenos Aires regiert werden."
Der britische Premierminister David Cameron sagte, er unterstütze die Volksabstimmung: "Ich habe immer gesagt, dass die Bewohner der Falklandinseln selber entscheiden sollen, ob sie britisch sein wollen oder nicht. Die Volksabstimmung wird zeigen, was die Menschen wollen. Großbritannien wird ihren Entscheid respektieren und verteidigen."
Die Falklandinseln werden von 3000 Menschen bewohnt und sind seit 1833 britisches Überseegebiet. 1982 besetzte die damalige argentinische Militärjunta die Inselgruppe. Der Falklandkrieg zwischen Großbritannien und Argentinien dauerte 74 Tage und kostete mehr als 900 Menschen das Leben.
Vor dem Gedenktag zum Beginn des Krieges Anfang April hatte sich der Konflikt zeitweise wieder verschärft. Unter anderem hatte die argentinische Präsidentin Cristina Fernández de Kirchner London vorgeworfen, den Streit zu "militarisieren". Ärger gab es auch, weil Prinz William an einer Militärübung auf den Inseln im Rahmen einer Weiterbildung als Hubschrauberpilot teilgenommen hatte.

Borders & Southern: A Gas Condensate Discovery Plus Imminent 1 Billion Barrel Drilling Results
In April, Borders & Southern (BDRSF.PK) (can also purchase on the LSE under BOR) announced a gas condensate find at their Darwin prospect, which is south of the Falkland Islands. B&S are currently drilling their Stebbing well and results are expected at any time. In the short term, the two main drivers of price are going to be Darwin reservoir/fluid analysis and Stebbing results.
With regards to Darwin, the most important question is, how much is there? The current mean estimate of Gas In Place is roughly 2.44 TCF. Liquids content is still unknown until fluid samples are analyzed by a lab. The lab received the reservoir fluid sample on June 18th. The reason for delay (April TD - June analysis) was that B&S decided to send the sample back to the UK by ship rather than air in order to save the cost of chartering an aircraft.
The fluid analysis is expected to take up to 10 weeks. The results of the fluid analysis are critical to the development/commerciality of Darwin. With enough liquid content, Darwin should be able to be a standalone project which is very important to B&S as Darwin is currently their only hydrocarbon find. It's also possible, depending on natural gas prices and (floating?) LNG capital costs, for Darwin to be economic on gas alone.
The hydrocarbon find at Darwin also brings two important pieces of information: there is a working hydrocarbon system in the basin and the hydrocarbons are able to migrate into the reservoirs. The source rock for the Darwin prospect was not penetrated in the well. This means the source rock is deeper than the reservoir and faulting has allowed the hydrocarbons to migrate up into the reservoir sands. One might say that the migration/presence of hydrocarbons in Darwin helps derisk the Stebbing well as Borders has constantly stated both propsects depend on the same source rock. Darwin has proved hydrocarbons are there and able to move into the reservoirs. On a related note, Falklands Oil & Gas (FLKOF.PK) is also depending on faulting and fracturing for hydrocarbon migration into the sands of their Loligo prospect.
Stebbing, which is buried shallower than Darwin (source rock = less mature = oil vs gas), should be completed any day now. The original timeline given would have been for a late June TD. An oil find here would be very encouraging for B&S. I have written another article on what I think Borders would be worth on an oil find.
Ultimately, Borders has excellent potential at both of their plays. Even if Stebbing were to be a dry hole, Darwin has the potential to be standalone commercial. French utility EDF has just farmed into FLKOF's acreage in the Falklands and could be a potential partner to help develop Darwin.
Keep in mind, these junior oil stocks are very volatile and can move 5%+ in a single day. A dry hole at Stebbing will be disastrous for the share price. I wouldn't be surprised to see -50% or more on a Stebbing dry hole. On the other hand, an oil find at Stebbing will give you a multi bagger that most people only dream about. After Stebbing is drilled, the rig will go to Falklands to drill their 4.7 billion barrel Loligo prospect. Remember only play with money you can afford to lose!

While tensions between Britain and Argentina have been rising as a natural response to the 30th anniversary of the Falkland Islands War, oil is the primary driver of a renewed Falkland dispute that will determine the fate of tens of billions of dollars in black gold.
At the same time, while Argentine President Cristina Kirchner and British Prime Minister David Cameron are trading serious barbs over the sovereignty issue, big oil companies are largely ignoring the implications and conducting business as usual.
The Falkand Islands (called the Islas Malvinas in Argentina) were reclaimed by the British in June 1982 after a 74-day war in response to an Argentine invasion. Argentina lost 649 troops in the war, while the UK lost 255 troops. The 30th anniversary of this war coincides with some major oil developments, which the UK is hoping to resolve by supporting the Falkland government’s holding of a referendum on its political status in 2013.
Argentina is on the losing end of this battle. Not only will the referendum favor the status quo, but Kirchner’s recent move to nationalize Argentina’s interests in Spain’s Repsol oil company has lost her any support she might have enjoyed (particularly from Spain, France and Italy) over the Falklands issue.
This is exactly what big oil is banking on, and recent months have seen some significant developments that seem to ignore the brewing tensions entirely. Two major discoveries are set to turn the Falklands into a key oil player almost overnight. The first, and less significant, is the 1.3 billion barrel discovery by Rockhopper’s Sea Lion (RKH) in the north Falklands Basin. The second is the 4.7 billion barrel prospect of Loligo, for which FOGL plans to start drilling its first well this month.
The Loligo prospect was boosted by news that came in the first week of June that Edison Spa, an Italian utility bought by France’s EDF in June, will acquire a 25 percent interest in northern licenses of Falkland Oil & Gas and another 12.5 percent interest in FOGL’s southern licenses. The significance of the Edison Spa deal is that it will provide FOGL with some much-needed financing to get things under way in Loligo. In return for the licenses, the utility company will fund FOGL’s drilling to the tune of $50 million and hand over another $40 million in cash.
The oil angle to the Falklands dispute gained momentum in 2010 when the UK authorized prospecting, provoking the ire of Argentina. The next major uptick in the ongoing crisis came in December last year, when Rockhopper revealed that its Sea Lion field held more oil than expected. This in turn led to an immediate increase in interest in the Falklands’ offshore oil prospects. The UK moved quickly to ensure the security of these discoveries by sending in naval units, prompting a harsh response from Argentina and escalating the crisis.
But the UK holds most of the cards. Not only will “Falklanders” vote to remain a self-governed overseas territory of the United Kingdom in a referendum, but Spain, Italy and France in particular have no sympathy for Argentina in the aftermath of its decision to nationalize its Repsol interests. Oil exploration is proceeding as if the dispute is resolved.
So with the oil momentum already picking up an irreversible pace, how will the sovereignty dispute be resolved? As far as the UK is concerned, it will not negotiate the issue before the United Nations unless it is asked to do so by the Falklands legislature, which is happy to hold a referendum. The results of the referendum will provide the UK with any ammunition it needs.
Argentina’s only real recourse here is military. Many expect a great deal of bluster on the issue and high-minded rhetoric recalling British colonialism and the like in the coming weeks, particularly as plans proceed at a fast pace for exploration and drilling. But in the end, such rhetoric would be designed largely to allow Kirchner to appease a public that has long been taught to view the Falkland Islands as an integral part of Argentina.
The UK might have been willing to decolonize the Falklands, and certainly, it has seriously entertained the notion in the past. But now that the Falkands are set to become a major oil player, the situation is very different. No one wants Argentina to step in and claim the islands with the fear of nationalization fresh on the heels of the Repsol debacle. The bottom line is that Argentina lost the Falklands over Repsol.

FOGL intends to drill its first well on the Loligo prospect and the second well will be selected based on the Loligo well results. If the initial Loligo results are encouraging, it will either be a further well on Loligo or a well on Nimrod. Otherwise, a well will be drilled on the Mid Cretaceous Scotia prospect. Further drilling in this campaign would be subject to these well results and to rig availability.

analogues in the South Atlantic.
Farm out: Industry approval
FOGL’s execution of a farm-out deal with Edison International (Edison) signals
verification of the technical potential from within the industry and demonstrates that
political concerns are not deterring investment in the Falklands. This has been further
supported with Premier Oil’s recent farm in to Rockhopper’s licences. The Edison deal
also brings greater financial flexibility for FOGL and gives it the option to cover any
drilling contingency and future 3D seismic or a possible third well.
Recent basin results encouraging
Borders and Southern’s (B&S) discovery well in Darwin has proved a working
hydrocarbon system in the basin, with a mature source rock in the area, together with
a good quality reservoir and a working seal; all positive outcomes that point to the
potential of the basin. Although the inconclusive results from B&S’s Stebbing have
disappointed the market, strong gas shows here still indicate that the basin is
hydrocarbon bearing.
Valuation: Re-rating potential
FOGL continues to trade at a significant discount to peers at $0.3/bbl. With the farm
down we reduce our risked pre-drill valuation range to 155-186p based on the
expected upside in the case of drilling success. In reality we could expect more than
400% upside if FOGL declares a commercial discovery. The share price could fall to
around cash at 20p if both wells fail. FOGL estimates a chance of success for each
well of c 20%.

Argentina threatens Premier Oil over Falklands deal
..........The Foreign Ministry said it had taken legal action against Rockhopper's "illegal" oil exploration activities on the "Argentine continental shelf".
"Likewise, the Argentine government informed Premier Oil that the government ... will initiate administrative, civil and penal action against it with regard to these activities," the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

Argentina claims sovereignty over the islands. A claim it has pressed strongly since the discovery of oil in the Falklands in 2010, with verbal attacks on Britain and threats of legal action on oil companies drilling offshore the islands.
Last week, Premier said the threat of Argentine action was a “risk worth taking”. It hopes to see oil flowing from Sea Lion field by 2017. It has received a letter in the past asserting Argentina’s claim to the area’s oil.
Simon Lockett, Premier’s chief executive, said the company had “thought long and hard” before signing the Rockhopper deal and had sought advice on the situation, including from the UK government, before deciding it was “a good project to invest in”.
“Our conclusion was that this is a risk worth taking,” he said: “It would be foolhardy of us to dismiss the risk as nothing.”
The British government has made clear it will stand behind oil exploration in the area, while many doubt Argentina could succeed in any legal claims.

The Sea Lion field alone could deliver more than $9bn of tax and royalties to the Falklands, Edison Investment Research estimates.
Earlier this year, Argentina vowed to press criminal and civil charges on British oil companies exploring off the Falkland Islands.
Rockhopper received a letter, as did Falkland Oil & Gas, Borders & Southern, Desire Petroleum and Argos Resources on April 17, telling them "of their illicit actions and their consequences".
Shares in Premier rose 3.7pc on Tuesday. Rockhopper shares fell 8pc.
