The software industry is about to be hit by a tsunami of consolidation, investors said. As startups' market values tumble, customers become scarcer and prospects dim, many smaller software makers will look to more established companies to acquire them rather than go out of business, they said.
Early Signs
Some signs that small software makers are looking to larger rivals for help already have emerged.
SAP AG, the largest maker of business-management software, said last week it will boost its stake in money-losing Commerce One Inc., whose software helps businesses create marketplaces on the Web, to 20 percent.
SAP may just buy Commerce One, and International Business Machines Corp. may be interested in Ariba Inc., a Commerce One rival, said Mac Furst, an analyst at Harris Bretall Sullivan & Smith LLC, which manages $5.5 billion. IBM and Ariba spokespeople declined to comment.
Oracle Corp. Chief Executive Larry Ellison is less optimistic about the future for companies like Commerce One and Ariba, predicting instead that they'll wither away.
Ellison has said only SAP and Oracle, the third-largest software company, will survive in the market for applications to help companies do business on the Internet, trampling smaller rivals such as Ariba, Commerce One and E.piphany Inc.
