Zwar schrieb Volvo schon vor der Finanzkrise Verluste, doch die Autos verkauften sich lange Zeit noch gut: 2007 verzeichnete der Autobauer mit einem Umsatz von 17,9 Mrd. $ eines der erfolgreichsten Jahre der jüngeren Unternehmensgeschichte. Dann kam die Krise und mit ihr der Einbruch. In nur zwei Jahren sank die Zahl der abgesetzten Autos um 27 Prozent. 2008 fuhr Volvo einen Verlust in Höhe von knapp 1,5 Mrd. $ ein.
Als Ford  sich für den Verkauf entschied, fanden sich kaum ernsthafte Interessenten für das Unternehmen. Anders als in Deutschland, wo sich Politiker lange um Kreditbürgschaften für Opel stritten und dadurch wichtige Entscheidungen verzögerten, machte die schwedische Regierung gleich klar: Kein Geld vom Staat! Stephen Odell war damals, wie er selbst sagt, "schon enttäuscht". Aber gerade diese harte Haltung hat Volvo wohl letztlich gerettet - weil schnell gehandelt werden musste.
Der Automobil- und Motorradhersteller Geely unter der Führung von Li Shufu traut sich die Mammutaufgabe zu, Volvo wieder dauerhaft in die schwarzen Zahlen zu bringen. Mittel genug hat das Unternehmen. Und mit dem chinesischen Staat einen überaus potenten Geldgeber im Rücken.

Volvo könnte von der Übernahme profitieren. China ist ein großer Markt, der bei Weitem noch nicht ausgeschöpft ist. Bereits heute verkauft Volvo dort jährlich 30.000 bis 40.000 Autos, was etwa fünf Prozent des gesamten Absatzes entspricht.
Chinas wachsende Mittelschicht giert nach prestigeträchtigen Marken, mit denen sie auf den Straßen Pekings und Schanghais glänzen kann. Volvo ist so eine Marke. Geely-Chef Li Shufu spricht von 200.000 Fahrzeugen, die man in China jährlich absetzen könnte. Zumal nun auch die horrenden Importzölle wegfallen, mit denen China Wettbewerbern aus dem Ausland das Leben bislang noch schwer macht.

In the second half of 2010, the Hangzhou-based company is set to launch nine new car models at least, and the EC 825 will be its stepping-stone to the B+ automobile market. Being the first high- and medium-end sedan of Geely, this product priced at more than CNY 100,000 is 4.9 meters long, with an over 2.8-meter wheelbase.

The yearly sales volume of EC 825 is estimated at 30,000 units or so. Remarkably, Geely is designed to build up its presence in the government procurement and business car markets, by promoting this new sedan model.

In addition, its first SUV named EX 718, the first actual crossover, and two new cars to be yielded based on the same production platform will hit the market.

By last month, the proportion of China's self-developed passenger car sales volume to total auto sales had declined for three consecutive months."

In view of Volvo's 108% sales growth in the first five months of this year in China, Li Shufu confidently said that Volvo is expected to become profitable in two years.

At present, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the State Council are considering the due diligence and the expected plan, submitted by Geely, for the development of the Volvo brand. The possibility of getting the approval is quite good, and Ford is also waiting for the approval from the European Union, media reported."

A new Chinese plant, with a capacity nearly matching Volvo's entire 2009 output, would help boost the Swedish premium brand in the fast-growing Chinese market, which last year overtook the United States as the world's biggest car market.
