A representative of an American biomedical company said in Gaborone yesterday that they have developed technology that can perform HIV tests on urine samples.
According to Richard Van Maanen of Calypte corporation, those who fear needles need not to worry because the technology can give the same results as the blood based tests.
"When compared with the existing blood-based tests, our testing algorithms are non-invasive, easier to perform, less expensive, have less risk and most importantly accurate," said Van Maanen at a public presentation at Falcon Crest yesterday.
The medical breakthrough that discovered that HIV antibodies are present in urine has received the blessing of American Food and Drug Association (FDA). Through its strategic partner, Wise Investments Botswana, Calypte explained the new method to government, NGOs and stakeholders involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic. Other countries such as Uganda and Kenya have rolled out tests using urine to detect the presence of HIV.
"A complete Calypte testing procedure requires only one and half millilitre of urine and is conducted according to the same laboratory protocols as blood testing. Samples can be collected at any time of the day and may be stored at room temperature for up to 55 days," Van Maanen. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is soon to release an official statement endorsing the urine tests as an alternative means to detecting HIV antibodies.
"Ten years ago, people thought it was not possible to detect HIV in the human body other than by using blood samples. But the accuracy rate of 99.5 percent is similar to that of blood testing. What is even giving hope is the stability of the urine samples that need not be stored at a certain temperature to stay fresh. It can be collected at anytime of day and for this test to have the FDA approval, we had to test for other strains in other countries to demonstrate sensitivity of the test to other races," said Van Maanen.
He said there is a universal complaint among people who go for HIV tests that they are made to wait unnecessarily long before they can get their results. This has made some people reluctant to go for tests. Recently, the world's richest man, Bill Gates expressed concern that Batswana were not taking advantage of the free facilities to go for HIV tests.
