Sonus Rallies on Interest in Voice-IP Technology SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of Sonus Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:SONS - news), a developer of networking voice technology, rose for the second straight session on Thursday, hitting a 10-week high on the view that the company is poised to sell more equipment or could emerge as an acquisition target. Shares of Westford, Massachusetts-based Sonus have been boosted by plans by communications giant Sprint Corp. (NYSE:FON - news) to upgrade its network, said Timothy Savageaux, a research analyst with WR Hambrecht & Co. Sprint on Tuesday discussed plans with financial analysts to transition to packet-based voice-over-IP technology, from circuit-based voice technology, Savageaux said. ``They're going to spend over $4.1 billion over eight years on this transition,'' Savageaux said. ``Sonus will get their share.'' Another source of support for the stock has been comments by Cisco Systems Inc.(Nasdaq:CSCO - news) which told analysts this week that one area of its future focus was voice-over-IP technology, which prompted speculation that Sonus could end up as an acquisition target for the network equipment giant, said Joe Cyr, director of equity research at CIBC World Markets. ``There was speculation yesterday about Sonus as a possible good fit with Cisco and that's continuing today,'' Cyr said. Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers on Tuesday told Reuters the company plans between eight and 12 acquisitions over the next 12 months, but declined to detail what types of companies Cisco may seek to buy. Sonus shares gained 46 cents, or 8 percent, to close at $6.18 on Thursday, its highest close since Sept. 26. The shares rose 18.4 percent on Wednesday. (CCUR) said Time Warner Cable's central Florida division has purchased 73 video servers from it for video-on-demand services. The central Florida division is Time Warner Cable's third-largest cable system. Concurrent also said Time Warner Cable, a division of AOL Time Warner (AOL), is planning to use Concurrent's broadband video-on-demand business management system for back office services, such as billing and subscription management. Concurrent said it has now been selected to support Time Warner's roll-out of video-on-demand in its second, third and fourth largest divisions.
