Insurer AIG revealed as fourth member of BAA bid consortium American International Group (AIG), the world's largest insurer which recently signed a bumper shirt sponsorship deal with Manchester United, has joined the Goldman Sachs-led consortium that has had a £9.4bn bid approach for BAA turned down by the airports operator. < script language=javascript src="/core/NetGravity/mpu.js">< /script>< script language=JavaScript src="http://ads.telegraph.co.uk/js.ng/site=money&spaceid=mpu&sz=200x200&sz=240x400&sz=250x250&sz=300x250&ls=f&transactionID=1145369985734&Section=money/city_news&view=details&xml=/money/2006/04/18/cnaig18.xml">< /script>< iframe marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="http://view.atdmt.com/REP/iview/tlgrpo2s1570000044rep/direct/01/bzzabKe,bcejKfhcgRlfg?click=http://ads.telegraph.co.uk/event.ng/Type%3dclick%26FlightID%3d13196%26AdID%3d15609%26TargetID%3d2549%26Segments%3d102,381,406,427,473,475,491,731,732,855,950,964,972,998,1026,1045,1057,1063,1088,1150,1171,1242,1418,1428,1532,1643,1644,1652,1695,1703,1773,1779,1792,1793,1797,1800,1824,1844,1847%26Targets%3d2639,154,2549,2697,3171,3303,2700,3036,2801,3266,3274,3314,3339,3356,3397,3450,3457,2950,2863,3408,3440,3299,3387,3310,3321,3455%26Values%3d20,31,43,51,60,72,82,91,100,110,150,152,196,197,198,1013,1305,1314,1393,1456,1899,2096,2098,2258,2317,2336,2423,2491,2502,2517,2543,2621,2642,2664,2666,2667,2680,3109,3116,3126%26RawValues%3d%26Redirect%3d" frameBorder=0 width=300 scrolling=no height=250 topmargin="0" leftmargin="0">< script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">document.write(' ');< /script>< /iframe> The other parties are the two Canadian pension funds Borealis and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. They made an approach on March 30 to BAA, which operates Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Edinburgh airports. BAA revealed the approach on Sunday, when it officially rejected the offer, which it said failed to reflect its "true value". Goldman yesterday confirmed its interest in bidding for BAA. It said that following BAA's rejection, its consortium was reviewing its options, but it gave no undertaking that it would return with a revised proposal. America's General Electric is also interested in BAA. UK government sources, who are monitoring BAA's possible sale closely, said the US conglomerate was not in the Goldman consortium at the moment but was interested in becoming involved. AIG would not comment on its interest in BAA. The New York-based insurer sealed the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in English football on April 6 when it signed a four-year contract for £56.5m to have its name emblazoned on Manchester United's shirts. The move was interpreted by analysts as being about AIG's wish to capitalise on its presence in Asia, where the football team is very popular, and its desire to raise its profile in the UK. BAA has been the subject of intense bid speculation since February, when the Spanish construction group Ferrovial mooted its interest in buying the world's largest airports operator. Ferrovial came back with a hostile 810p-a-share offer on April 7. In the meantime, Goldman approached BAA about making a "white knight" offer for the company which would have fended off the Spanish approach. BAA has rejected all offers so far.
