UltraCard, Inc. Appoints New Directors of Engineering, Card Development and Software/Firmware As Part of Business Expansion

CAMPBELL, Calif., Apr 18, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- UltraCard, Inc., a subsidiary of Upgrade International Corporation (OTCBB:UPGD), developers of high capacity, portable data storage, announced it has appointed three new Directors to help manage UltraCard's continuing growth and expanding business activity.
Henry S. Perez has been appointed as Director of Engineering for UltraCard Inc. His primary responsibility at UltraCard is overseeing product design and manufacturing.
Prior to joining UltraCard, Perez was Director of Engineering for the Recording Media Research Center and Recording Media Operations for Seagate Technology in Fremont, California. In that position, he managed capital and expense budgets of up to $68M for the 1280-person facility and coordinated site operations, new technology assessment, capital asset management, and lab design and construction.
Perez also worked for IBM Corporation from 1974 to 1996. He served in several positions there including Development Manager and Disk Equipment Engineering Manager. As Development Manager, he managed the HGA pilot line, supporting the MR head development group in prototyping and developing tooling, processes and early manufacture of MR heads for new disk drives.
Perez received his B.S.M.E. degree from California State Polytechnic University and his M.S.M.E. degree from the University of California at Berkeley
In addition, Bruce M. Lairson, Ph.D. has been appointed as Director of Card Development for the company. He is respected and well known in the thin film and recording industries and has six patents in thin film and recording, with two patents pending. He has held senior positions with several blue-chip companies including Hewlett Packard, Western Digital and Komag Corporation.
Bruce has more than twenty years experience in the field of data transmission and storage. His primary responsibility at UltraCard will be to continue to develop card compatibility with reader characteristics, qualifying cards for field reliability and installing the manufacturing process for the media.
Prior to joining UltraCard, Bruce was Director of Sputter Development for Komag Corporation in San Jose, California. In that position, he managed a group of 12 products from initial concept to release and manufacture on sputter tools. Previously he worked with Komag, as Director of Advanced Technology at Western Digital Corporation where he established product direction and technology alternatives for media and heads, including optically based storage.
Bruce received his MS in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford University. He also has an ME in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University.
Finally, Rob Reasons, Ph.D. has been appointed as Director of Software and Firmware for UltraCard. Reasons specializes in high security encryption technology, secure financial transactions, e-commerce and government applications for UltraCard.
Reasons served in the U.S. Navy Intelligence Division and speaks fluent Japanese. As founder of Alpha Resources, he developed a number of tools and of instruments designed to help companies operate more efficiently and cost-effectively. These include a hand-held battery operated digital storage device, a digital torque wrench, and a telephone security system. He also designed and manufactured several instruments used in analytical chemistry.
Other previous positions include periods at Boehringer Mannheim and MOST, an optical disk drive manufacturer where he designed firmware and the microcontroller used to control the MOST 3.5 inch disk drive.
Rob has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He also has a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Computer Science
