gegen Iran und andere Terroristenländer. Markige Worte vonBush:(nicht nur bei n-tv)
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., Nov. 21 --Today, about 150 soldiers were chosen to eat turkey, green beans and macaroni with the president, while the rest had the opportunity to spend $2 for a hot dog and Doritos from concession stands.
President Bush today promised preemptive strikes against any terrorists plotting to attack the United States, and told parachute troops that the apparent rout of the Taliban is but the beginning of the war, with the hardest part still to come.
"We've made a good start in Afghanistan, yet there is still a lot to be done," Bush told the "Screaming Eagles" of the 101st Airborne Division, at the nation's third most populous Army base.
"There are still terrorists on the loose in Afghanistan, and we will find and destroy their network, piece by piece. The most difficult steps in this mission still lie ahead," Bush said.
White House officials said that in the seventh week of a war that could take years, Bush was anxious to persuade the nation to resist complacency after the string of victories in Afghanistan. The officials cautioned that those swift gains may be difficult to replicate as Bush's coalition moves on to new targets.
"There are other terrorists who threaten America and our friends, and there are other nations willing to sponsor them," Bush said. "We will not be secure as a nation until all of these threats are defeated."
Bush's remarks marked a turn from reassuring the nation to rallying it for a new phase of a long war. "Great causes are not easy causes," he said.
The president did not hint at the next target, although some administration officials are arguing that it should be Iraq. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz said during a Pentagon briefing today that the United States has evidence that Iraq is continuing to build chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, "both with their indigenous capabilities and acquiring what they can illicitly in the international market."
Wars are not won on the home front alone," he said. "Wars are won by taking the fight to the enemy. America is not waiting for terrorists to try to strike us again. Wherever they hide, wherever they plot, we will strike the terrorists."
"America has a message for the nations of the world: If you harbor terrorists, you are terrorists," Bush said. "If you train or arm a terrorist, you are a terrorist. If you feed a terrorist or fund a terrorist, you're a terrorist, and you will be held accountable by the United States and our friends." Pausing for applause, he added, "The Taliban know that." Administration officials have expressed frustration that Syria, Iran and other countries have done little to dislodge terrorists the United States accuses them of harboring.
Some Green Beret units and other Special Forces have slipped out of Fort Campbell for Central Asia, and rumors about who will be next dominate soldiers' conversations.
