Kurz darauf im Jahre 1988 führte die International Telecommunication Unit (ITU) die Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) ein, ein Standard für öffentliche Kommunikationssysteme unter Verwendung von Singlemode-Fasern. In der Folge war die Nachfrage nach Singlemode-Fasern größer als die Nachfrage nach Multimode-Fasern. Aufgrund der veränderten Nachfragesituation kam Sumitomo Electric zu der Einschätzung, dass der Markt für Transceiver für optische Applikationen mit großer Reichweite viel versprechend und notwendig ist und begann mit der Entwicklung von Laserdioden mit verteilter Rückkopplung (DFB-LD) und Fabry-Perot-Laserdioden (FP-LD) für optische Singlemode-Applikationen. Die Serienproduktion der optischen Transmitter/Receiver mit 156 Mb/s und 622 Mb/s wurde 1993 aufgenommen. Die Geräte mit 2,5 Gb/s gingen 1994 in Serie und die Serienproduktion der Transceiver mit 10 Gb/s begann 2000.

Aufgrund seiner Leistungen und seiner technologischen Führungsposition im Bereich der optischen Transmitter/Receiver/Transceiver für verschiedenste optische Applikationen konnte Sumitomo Electric im April 2008 die 10-Millionen-Marke beim Versand knacken, und die Versandmenge steigt weiter an.

Sumitomo Electric gründete im April 2007 in China Sumitomo Electric Photo-Electronics Components (Suzhou), Ltd. (SPEC), um die Produktionskapazität zu steigern und die Lieferzeiten zu verkürzen. Im April 2008 nahm SPEC die Produktion von optischen Geräten und Transceivern auf. Da Sumitomo Electric weiterhin in den japanischen Werken produziert, kann die Produktionskapazität dank SPEC bis März 2009 um 50 % gesteigert werden.

The SFP 6G Series is part of the SFP transceiver family, which is fully compliant with IEEE802.3ae, SONET/SDH, Fibre Channel and SFP Multi Source Agreement specifications.
