Transmeta-Prozessor für Thin Client t5700 von HP Compaq


Der 1 GHz Crusoe TM5800-Prozessor von Transmeta, dem US-Notebook- und Embedded-Prozessor-Hersteller, wird im neuen Thin Client t5700 von HP Compaq eingesetzt. Das gab das Unternehmen heute in München bekannt. Durch die energiesparende Prozessortechnik soll ein leistungsstarker Rechner realisiert werden, das dennoch weniger Strom verbraucht, als bisherige Geräte.

Der Arbeitsspeicher des Thin Clients lässt sich bis auf 512 MB DDR-SDRAM erweitern, auch ein PCI-Slot ist vorgesehen. Das Betriebssystem Microsoft Windows XP Embedded.

Thin Clients sind Netzwerk-Computer (NC), die bestimmten Hardware-Richtlinien entsprechen. Diese Richtlinien für die Ausstattung von Thin Clients wurden von mehreren Hardware-Herstellern spezifiziert und umfassen die Bildschirmauflösung von mindestens 640 x 480 Bildpunkten, eine Tastatur, eine Maus und die Soundfähigkeit. Festplatten sind nicht erforderlich aber auch nicht explizit ausgeschlossen. Das Betriebssystem und die Anwendungssoftware liegen auf zentralen Servern von denen aus auch Programm-Updates und die Systemadministration erfolgt.

Ein reiner Thin Client ist ein Window-Terminal, das für Remote-Anwendungen ausgelegt ist. (as)

Transmeta share price soars, what gives?

Nvidiots interested? Maybe...

STRUGGLING CHIP firm Transmeta (TMTA) saw its share price soar on Friday rising by a staggering 16.30% as nearly six million shares changed hands.
But the big puzzle is exactly why it happened. TMTA shares have lingered at just above the $1 mark for months, and its future chip design, codenamed "Astro", isn't expected to give it an edge over future notebook tech from Intel or even AMD.

Rumours have circulated for well over a year that two other companies, Nvidia and Via, have been interested in acquiring Transmeta.

The latter, we understand, is believed to have been interested in TMTA because of its fight with Intel over patents and licences, but that trail has gone cold.

But if any company is seriously interested in Transmeta, Nvidia would be the better bet. It is widely rumoured to be contemplating producing "Nforce 5" – a chipset for Intel technology.
