SDL beats estimates

                 After the market closed, SDL Inc. (SDLI: news, msgs) reported fourth-quarter net
                 income of $48.2 million, or 53 cents a share, on revenue of $175.6 million,
                 compared with $12.8 million, or 17 cents a share, on revenue of $58.7 million in
                 the year-ago period. Analysts polled by First Call expected a profit of 49 cents a
                 share. The company said the quarter was driven by strong growth in shipments
                 of products for fiber optic communication systems.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW - news), the world's
     biggest maker of fiber-optic cable, said on Wednesday its fourth-quarter
     profits more than doubled on surging demand for optical fiber and
     components used in high-speed communications networks.

     Corning said fourth-quarter pro forma profits rose to $314.6 million, or 34
     cents a share, compared with $142.2 million, or 18 cents a share a year ago.
     Wall Street had expected the company to earn 28 cents a share, according to
     research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

     Revenues soared 52 percent to $2.1 billion. The quarterly results exceeded

     the company's recent guidance and reflected the insatiable demand for fiber cable, the backbone of
     telecommunications and the Internet.

     Shares of Corning have gained nearly 64 percent over the past year and outperformed the Standard & Poor's
     500 index by about 77 percent. Optical equipment stocks were one of the few sectors to buck the broad

RPT-Akamai Q4 losses narrow, cash burn rate declines

BOSTON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Akamai Technologies Inc., whose services speed the delivery
of Web pages, said on Wednesday its fourth-quarter losses narrowed, beating Wall Street
estimates, as it continues to expand its network of servers.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai (NasdaqNM:AKAM - news), whose shares have plunged nearly 90 percent during the past
year, said it lost $58.9 million, or 61 cents a share, before special items compared with losing $55.7 million, or 60 cents a
share, in the preceding quarter.

Analysts, on average, had expected Akamai to lose 68 cents a share, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Akamai revenue increased 37 percent to $37.2 million, compared with $27.2 million in the previous quarter as its customer
base from recurring contracts grew to 1,337, up nearly 20 percent from 1,115 in the preceding quarter.

Before its earnings were released, shares of Akamai closed up $3-1/4, or 10 percent, to $35-3/8 on Nasdaq, well below their
year-high of $305-15/16.

                 Foundry Networks (FDRY: news, msgs) posted fourth-quarter earnings of $21.5
                 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with the year-ago total of $15.5 million, or
                 12 cents a share. Analysts polled by First Call expected a profit of 12 cents a
                 share. Revenue reached $105 million, compared with $55.1 million in the
                 year-ago period. In addition, the company said revenue would be in the range of
                 $100 million to $110 million for the first quarter. As for the full-year of 2000, the
                 company expects $475 million to $525 million.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Jan 24 (Reuters) - Biotechnology giant Amgen Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMGN - news) on Wednesday

reported lower fourth-quarter net income amid slower sales of its immunity-boosting drug Neupogen, just missing analyst
forecasts.

Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., said fourth-quarter income fell to $211 million, or 19 cents a diluted share, including
charges, compared with year-earlier totals of $282 million, or 26 cents. Revenue rose to $951.4 million from $927 million in
the fourth quarter of 1999.

Immunex reports higher Q4 profits, strong Enbrel sales

SEATTLE, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Drugmaker Immunex Corp. (NasdaqNM:IMNX - news) on
Wednesday its fourth quarter profits rose more than 200 percent, edging above Wall Street
forecasts, as sales of its flagship anti-arthritis treatment Enbrel climbed 65 percent.

The Seattle-based company said net income for the quarter reached $49.2 million, or 9 cents a share, up from $16.2 million, or
3 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

Analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial had on average estimated quarterly profit at 8 cents a share.

Immunex said total revenues for the quarter rose to $250.7 million, from $162.6 million in the fourth quarter of 1999. Enbrel
sales rose to $194.1 million in the latest quarter, a gain of 65 percent over the same period in 1999 and 13 percent increase
over the third quarter of 2000.

Veritas' Q4 results beat Street estimates

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan 24 (Reuters) - Data management software vendor Veritas
Software Corp. (NasdaqNM:VRTS - news) said on Wednesday that its fourth-quarter pro
forma results surpassed expectations as revenues grew 64 percent from the year-ago quarter.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, the Mountain View, Calif. company posted pro forma income -- excluding purchase
accounting adjustments, of 19 per diluted share, or $83.9 million, to beat analysts' average forecast of 17 cents per share,
according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

The results surpassed those from the year-ago quarter, when the company posted pro forma earnings of $50.7 million, or 12
per diluted share.

Fourth quarter revenues were grew to $370.1 million from $226.2 million a year ago.

Veritas shares closed 15/16 lower at $104-1/16 before the company's results were announced. The stock was down 8 percent
on the year in 2000, but has rebounded by 20 percent this year, outpacing the Nasdaq Composite.
