Rakuten to Launch R-Toon, a New Digital Comic Distribution Service Coming as Soon as This Fall - Rakuten to collaborate with partner companies to jointly produce original, vertically scrolling digital comic titles.

Tokyo, June 15, 2023 – Rakuten Group, Inc. today announced that it will launch R-Toon, a new digital comic book distribution service, in fall 2023 or later.

R-Toon is a new Rakuten service that enables users to read original, vertically scrolling digital comic titles. The service will allow users to read one chapter a day free of charge. Users will also be able purchase comics on a per-chapter basis.

Rakuten has partnered with Shonengahosha Co., Ltd., Straight Edge Inc. and Nitroplus Co., Ltd. to start jointly producing original digital comics. The companies are currently developing new titles which will be released on R-Toon.

Bisher antizipieren die Märkte nur die Verwässerung durch die Kapitalerhöhung und ignorieren komplett die bessere Finanzierung durch den Zufluss von mehr als zwei Milliarden Dollar, der in entsprechender Höhe das Eigenkapital erhöht.

1&1 recently said it expected to launch its 5G offering for smartphone users by the third quarter of 2023

Germany’s competition regulator Bundeskartellamt is currently assessing whether Vodafone Germany or its affiliated company Vantage Towers unlawfully impeded newcomer 1&1 in the deployment of its mobile network infrastructure.

In a release, the regulator said it had started this assessment following a complaint filed by 1&1.

“We welcome the intended market entry of 1&1 as a fourth mobile network operator in Germany from a competition perspective. It is clear that to develop its own mobile phone network a company has to make high investments and take entrepreneurial risks when taking such a step. It is a key task of competition law to set fair rules of play for companies’ business practices. Powerful and dominant companies must not unfairly impede other companies. We will therefore scrutinize whether there are sound reasons for a delay in the provision of antenna locations for 1&1,” said Andreas Mundt, president of the Bundeskartellamt.

The assessor downgraded its view by a notch to A- and said the outlook was negative for billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani’s company, which has racked up four consecutive years of losses.

Several of Rakuten’s bonds have fallen to levels typically considered distressed, while its shares have dropped 17% this year, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

“Earnings improvement in the mobile business has been slow, and it will be difficult for this business on its own to move into the black in terms of operating income in a single month during 2023,” the ratings agency said. “The improvement in the performance of the mobile business is expected to take more time than JCR had previously assumed.”

The Toronto-based, Japanese-owned e-reader company says it now has 14.5 million registered users, with 15 per cent of its new users coming from the United States.

Kobo's customers were also reading 34 per cent more in the first quarter compared with the same time period last year.

Sales of the new Kobo Aura HD accounted for more than one in four eReaders sold at retail stores and sales of Kobo Writing Life self-publishing titles made up 10 per cent of revenue.
The company didn't disclose its revenue.

It also expects its growing library with books like Dan Brown's "Inferno" and Khaled Hosseini's "And the Mountains Echoed," will continue to grow its customer base as it expands to India, China and Russia.

Open Ran roughly two-times larger than the original open RAN 2023 projections published in 2020

Dell’Oro Group noted that open RAN revenues increased between 10% and 20% during the first quarter of the year, which was down from the more than doubling in revenues that occurred in 2022. Virtualized RAN (vRAN) showed a bit more growth in the latest quarter, with market revenues increasing between 20% and 30% year over year.

Despite the flattening, Pongratz said he is keeping his full-year prediction that open RAN equipment will account for between 6% and 10% of the total RAN market by the end of 2023.

“It is worth keeping in mind that our current 2023 revenue outlook for open RAN is roughly two-times larger than the original open RAN 2023 projections we outlined back with our first open RAN forecast published in 2020,” Pongratz added. “So there is no doubt that open RAN is, from our perspective, accelerating at a much faster pace than initially expected, even with the slower [year-over-year] growth rates in [the first quarter].”
