NORWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2001--
Exclusive License to Develop and Market Audio Amplifiers Using Apogee's DDX Technology
Apogee Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:APGT) announced today that it has signed an exclusive license agreement with STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) for its Direct Digital Amplification (DDX(R)) all-digital, high efficiency amplifier technology. This licensing agreement gives STMicroelectronics the exclusive rights to develop, manufacture, and sell products incorporating Apogee's DDX technology. STMicroelectronics will use DDX as the key digital amplification technology in its audio products family. Apogee retains the rights to design and market DDX-based semiconductor products, which will be manufactured exclusively by STMicroelectronics. The companies expect to commence shipping DDX-based products in the second quarter of 2001.
"Our agreement with Apogee is an important step toward further enhancing and expanding our position as the leading provider of audio amplifier solutions," said Dr. Riccardo Ferrari, Audio Business Unit Director at ST, Telecommunication and Peripherals/Automotive Groups. "With the consumer electronics industry rapidly adopting digital audio recording, transmission, and playback technologies such as MP3 and DVD systems, DDX's all-digital design is the ideal amplifier technology. The benefits of improved efficiency and the ability to integrate DDX's digital functions meet our customers' requirements for cost effective, digital solutions."
"The selection of DDX by STMicroelectronics is an indication of the uniqueness and strength of DDX and its potential in the marketplace," said David Meyers, Apogee's Vice President of Business Development. "With STMicroelectronics state-of-the-art semiconductor design and manufacturing capabilities as well as their broad penetration of the audio market, we believe that DDX will rapidly become the new standard for audio amplification."
About DDX
Direct Digital Amplification (DDX) is an Apogee patented fully digital, high efficiency amplifier technology that enables manufacturers to produce compact audio systems at low cost. DDX directly interfaces with digital audio sources such as CD or MP3 recordings, thereby preserving pure digital quality. This is in contrast with traditional amplifier designs that require an analog input generated by a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). DDX eliminates the need and the cost of a DAC and removes the potential for noise and distortion. In addition to superb sound, DDX's high efficiency design reduces power supply and packaging costs and extends battery life. Products that will benefit from a DDX amplifier include Televisions, MP3 and DVD playback devices, PC/Internet multimedia systems, portable audio players, communication devices, and car audio systems.
