Its last net profit was recorded in the March 2000 quarter.
Excluding one-time items, Lucent reported an operating profit of about $9 million, or break-even per share.
Sales in the quarter ended Sept. 30 slipped to $2.03 billion from $2.28 billion last year, but rose from the previous quarter's $1.96 billion.
