However, not all developers have been able to use the product until now, because of its private beta status. Today, there are just around 1,500 active developers using Layer on a monthly basis. Those numbers should now increase as Layer takes its service public.

Go to market: During the discussion, Joe discussed the company’s concerted effort to diversify its client base by going after the lower end of the market with new product offerings (discussed below). In addition, the company has seen increased diversity among the 21 new customers added so far in 2015. For instance, FolioDynamix signed RBC, a large distribution network, which provides a significant opportunity for growth over the long term. •Learning and GovLoop: GovLoop was acquired by GovDelivery in 2009 and has since become a very large, very robust community of more than 200,000 government professionals. Scott explained that while there’s a lot of investment in learning and training, this is a space that’s “being very disrupted in government.” He described how GovLoop has been running online trainings for some time, building its experience and credibility and, ultimately, a great brand for training and learning in the market. That brand coupled with online training’s natural connection to our core expertise of communications, provides additional opportunity. “Last year, we started testing whether our clients would buy training from us. It has gone extraordinarily well.” Scott described how the team built out a light learning management system to fuse a strong technology component with services. He shared that we’ve seen a very strong response from the market, closing more than 20 deals in 2015 that average six figures and above.

3. Cross Selling and Growing Client Relationships: A recurring theme of Scott’s commentary centered on increasing the focus on cross selling to expand client relationships. He described three strategies for unlocking greater wallet share: (1) offering more packaged professional services solutions to appeal to the broader customer base; (2) increasing investments in engineering, to enable clients to upgrade their traditional communication cloud capabilities; and (3) doubling down on the account management team, which has been tasked with positioning clients for long term revenue growth and expansion. While many of these initiatives are still in the early stages, Scott credits these efforts in part with helping to drive increased bookings of both recurring and one-time contracts.

4. Mobile and complimentary technologies: Mobile technology enables GovDelivery to get messages to people when it matters most to maximize impact. GovDelivery works hard to ensure that the mobile experience is seamless and easy. Scott also discussed complementary technologies – such as email and social – citizens are using along with mobile technologies. “We find texting to be very good for certain things, but not as good for a more complex notice to a citizen… being able to access people who have a mobile device across a bigger demographic actually makes emailing more impactful and, and at the same time, gives us greater ability to use other technologies, like texting.”
