11/26/2002 - OGI: Shanghai) Far East Energy revealed today that it has joined with China United Coalbed Methane Company (CUCBM) to develop the Enhong and Laochang Fields in China's Yunnan Province. The formal contract will be signed next week in Beijing. A second production-sharing contract covering the Zhaotong Field is expected to be concluded in the near future. The Enhong and Laochang production-sharing contract covers an area of 1,063 sq km of coalbed methane natural gas development rights. Far East Energy has a 60% interest in the agreement, and CUCBM has a 40% interest.
China considers the development of its coalbed methane properties a strategic initiative to help increase domestic production of natural gas, improve safety at its coalmines, and drive improvements in the environment. China has formed similar production sharing relationships with other companies such as ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco, and BP.
Once signed, Far East Energy plans to begin drilling and development activities in the Enhong and Laochang Fields in early 2003.
