OpenTV Hits Major Industry Milestone, Surpassing
10 Million Interactive Television Set-Top Boxes
Deployed Worldwide
OpenTV Celebrates Achievement of More Than 10 Million STBs, Confirming Its Global
Interactive Television Leadership Position
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2000-- OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV - news; AEX:OPTV) today
announced that it has reached a major milestone for the interactive television (ITV) industry by becoming the first and only
solutions company to deploy more than 10 million set-top boxes (STBs) worldwide.
Deployments of OpenTV's more than 10 million STBs span all major digital interactive platforms, including satellite, cable and
terrestrial service providers, with the potential of expanding to other digital devices in the future. This record global STB
deployment milestone cements OpenTV's position as the world's leading interactive television and media solutions company.
``OpenTV's more than 10 million digital set-top boxes deployed worldwide far exceeds those of all of our competitors
combined,'' said James Ackerman, president and COO, OpenTV. ``We're the only company that regularly highlights actual
deployments, and we believe concrete deployments -- not trials, tests or design win announcements -- is the best metric for
measuring success in our industry.''
The variance on deployments between OpenTV and its primary competitors is significant. OpenTV currently empowers more
than 10 million deployed STBs globally, with an estimated 1 million in the United States alone by the end of 2000, due primarily
to OpenTV's ongoing relationship with satellite TV provider EchoStar.
``Service providers worldwide value OpenTV's innovation, performance and ability to offer complete, immediately deployable
solutions,'' Ackerman continued. ``OpenTV is the only company that can offer the scalability of broadcasting interactive content
combined with all the benefits of Internet-based standards, such as XML, HTML and Java. Our ability to deploy interactive
television to a mass-market audience gives our customers a powerful advantage.''
OpenTV's vast global reach heightens the potential of interactive television, exposing new revenues for distributors and content
suppliers alike. The company's software platform, or middleware, powers a full range of interactive applications that can be
distributed both one-way (broadcast) and two-way (return path). In a July 2000 report, Forrester Research predicted that by
2005, the overall interactive television market is expected to generate revenues of more than $48.2 billion.
Ackerman concluded: ``OpenTV's commitment to delivering ITV solutions, as evidenced by our more than 10 million
worldwide deployments, distinguishes us as the leading digital ITV solutions provider who can and does deliver. We're proud
of our track record, and will continue to strive to set the industry standard for deployments.''
To celebrate the 10 million-plus STB deployment milestone and thank its many customers, partners and employees, OpenTV is
hosting an Open House on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the company's headquarters in Mountain View. The event will feature multiple
demonstrations of interactive television applications powered by OpenTV from around the globe. Media interested in attending
OpenTV's Open House should contact Erin McCormack at 323/866-6040 or emccormack@mslpr.com.
