16:30 ET Dow -15.50 at 9052.44, Nasdaq -35.78 at 1570.17, S&P -6.48 at 1055.96: [BRIEFING.COM] Today's regular session lacked energy without any clear statement made as techs were weak, cyclicals were mixed and defensive groups were weak. That coupled with below average volume indicates traders are unwilling to put forth new money right now. The primary reason is that the Q3 earnings season kicks off after the bell tonight with Motorola (MOT 16.72 -0.67). Over the next few weeks, there will be some ugly earnings reports, the weakest in a long time as the Sep 11 attacks have had a huge impact on an important month. Techs will be hit hard as typically they rush to close deals in the last few weeks of a quarter. However, the weakness is not limited to tech as most every sector will be discussing the tragedy's impact on their businesses...Leading the way higher were biotech, brokerages, coal....Overall, energy stocks did well on speculation that OPEC is considering cutting production...Bio-agent detection and security stocks were clearly the biggest gainers: CPHD +86%, AATK +34%, TASR +28%, VISG +22%...Most other sectors were weak to mixed. Airlines, semiconductors, auto, media were among the many weak groups today. Auto stocks were weak in part due to Salomon Smith Barney slashing its 2001 estimate on Ford Motor (F 17.55 +0.26) to breakeven from $0.50. The firm now sees a 50% chance of a quarterly dividend cut to $0.20 from $0.30...All eyes will be on Motorola as the handset and semi giant reports after the bell tonight. It will affect not only telecom stocks, but also tech stocks generally as traders will look to the treatment of MOT's stock for guidance as to how this earnings season will be treated. Specifically, how forgiving will traders be for what will be a terrible Q3? Will they get a free pass? We'll know soon. DJTA -2.5%... DJUA -1.7%... SOX -5.9%... DOT -1.8%... XOI +1.0%... 15:30 ET Dow -54, Nasdaq -35, S&P -6.82: [BRIEFING.COM] The Dow and Nasdaq continue to trade in narrow ranges. Most every major index is in the red today, however, the S&P 400 MidCap Index is slightly positive. The market's reaction to MOT tonight will be a gauge for how traders will treat companies over the coming weeks as earnings report hit. It's expected many will be given a free pass for Q3 due to the attacks, but Q4 guidance will be the key...The semiconductors (SOX 407.73 -18.82) have been unable to spur any buying. The index is getting close to last Thursday's close and relinquish the strong gain from Friday to early Monday. SOX -4.4%... Nasdaq -35... NYSE Adv/Dec 1432/1622... Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1345/2128.

Expect it to affect other handset makers Nokia (NOK 17.27 +0.04), Ericsson (ERICY 3.81 -0.01) as well as: QCOM, AHAA, RFMD, PWAV, ANAD, TQNT, CLTK...Low volume today indicates this was not panic selling, but rather a preference of some traders to keep assets in cash. Rite-Aid (RAD +4%) is holding up better....First Data (FDC 61.41 +4.39) is posting a solid day after reporting Q3 earnings $0.03 better than consensus last night.
