Carrier1 Credit Rating Cut on Cash Balance, 2nd-Qtr Results

Zurich, Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Carrier1 International SA's credit rating was cut by Standard & Poor's on concern over the unprofitable telecommunications company's financial performance and spending.

The long-term corporate credit and senior unsecured debt ratings were cut two notches to `CCC'' from ``B-'' with a negative outlook, S&P said in a statement.

The downgrade ``reflects the company's third consecutive quarter of weakening operating performance, higher-than-expected cash burn rate, limited financial flexibility, and strong strategic uncertainties following the recent departure of the company's former chief executive officer,'' S&P said.

Last month Carrier1 said its second-quarter loss widened to $59.4 million from $12.8 million a year ago as bad debt swelled. The company has struggled as customers have gone bankrupt. Prices for voice communications have slumped amid excess network capacity, while companies are spending less on data services as growth slows.

Chief Executive Stig Johansson, who had been with the company since its inception in 1998, retired last month.

Its shares rose as much as 18 percent, or 17 cents, to 1.12 euros before the S&P announcement. The shares have fallen 95 percent this year.
