Geschichte der Leumi Bank

Over one hundred years ago, on the 27th of February 1902 in London, the Anglo Palestine Company was established, which in time became Bank Leumi Le-Israel.

Leumi was an integral part of the dream of repatriating the Jewish people to their historic homeland, and was envisioned by none other than Dr. Theodore Herzl.

He believed that in order to realize the Zionist dream and to build a modern state, it was necessary to establish a strong and professional financial institution. Dr. Herzl wrote:

"Jewish settlers in the Land of Israel do not need charity, but rather bank loans."

Among the objectives of the Anglo Palestine Company, as expressed by its charter in 1902, were to "develop and cultivate business initiative in industry, construction, agriculture, infrastructure, et al."

From its first day of business, the Bank set out to accomplish these goals.    Notwithstanding the hostile environment in which it was founded, a democratic state arose, fostering culture and technology.

The new nation's first bank played an essential role in its development.

We are proud of Leumi’s contribution to the State and the development of its economy.

Leumi was part of the vision of those who declared, "If you will it, it is no dream."

Leumi's founders demonstrated that hard work and dedication are the basis for achievement of dreams.    Throughout its history, Leumi has remained steadfast in its adherence to Jewish values combined with professional bank management. This traditional commitment has enabled the Bank to evolve into a successful and profitable world-renowned financial institution, which continues to play an integral part in the building of the State and its economy.

Leumi 's history and identity are interwoven with that of the Jewish people, and we are very proud that throughout the world, Jewish communities view Leumi as their financial institution.    Today, as in the past, we stand ready to achieve our objectives, to support our customers in Israel and abroad, and to safeguard the special character of our Bank, which fosters the fulfillment of our customers' aspirations.
