SciClone Pharmaceuticals has submitted an application to Chinese regulators to market its liver cancer treatment DC Bead.
SciClone expects to hear back from the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration within 90 days. At the same time, the company expects to begin a clinical trial using DC Bead in combination with the liver cancer treatment doxorubicin in the first half of 2007.
DC Bead uses microscopic beads administered by a catheter into a blood vessel to block the supply of nutrients and blood to a tumor.
Separately, the company said it completed patient enrollment in a trial on its hepatitis C treatment Zadaxin in combination with pegylated interferon alpha and ribavirin treatments. The company expects the drug to improve the effectiveness of the standard treatments without additional side effects.
Last week, SciClone announced positive study data on Zadaxin in patients with skin cancer. The drug significantly improved survival time in those taking the drug compared with patients given a placebo.
SCLN and its European partner Sigma-Tau said they've completed patient enrollment for the phase 3 clinical trial evaluating the use of Zadaxin in combination with pegylated interferon alpha and ribavirin to treat patients infected with the hepatitis C virus. The trial is being conducted by Sigma-Tau in Europe and has enrolled a total of 553 patients. End of Story
