F5's BIG-IP Enhances Quality of Service for Internet Sites Through High Availability and Load Balancing of Firewalls and Other Network Devices
The BIG-IP Controller enhances scalability, redundancy, and greater ease of management for firewalls, caches, proxy servers and other network devices
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2000-- F5 Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:FFIV - news) the leading provider of Internet traffic and content management (iTCM) products, announced that the Company's BIG-IP® Controller simultaneously load balances firewalls and any other router-like network devices, such as transparent caches and proxy servers.
Due to the growing use of these transparently configured devices and the inherent need to provide high availability, scalability and security, BIG-IP Controllers are being deployed to load balance and manage these devices. BIG-IP provides scalability and fault tolerance for transparently configured devices by automatically directing traffic to only those network devices that are functioning properly.
``The dramatic rise in companies leveraging the Web to conduct mission-critical business and the recent rise in e-Business cyber attacks is fueling the need for firewalls as a standard network device,'' said Mark Hoover, President at Acuitive, Inc. ``It's imperative that these devices are properly managed and load balanced in order to render the most secure, reliable, and high quality service to users.''
Another advanced capability of BIG-IP is its ability to load balance firewalls in a `firewall sandwich' configuration, enabling `transparent device persistence'. This addresses the need of certain applications requiring users to be sent through the same firewall to successfully and securely complete a transaction. This process can occur in secure environments that have firewalls with BIG-IP Controllers on the inside and outside of the network.
``BIG-IP's extensive manageability and flexible configuration options reduce the complexity of administering an Intranet site,'' said Brett Helsel, Senior-Vice President of Product Development at F5 Networks. ``BIG-IP provides load balancing capabilities while providing high availability for firewalls, web cache servers, mail filters, application proxies, Intranet web servers, mail, or other backbone servers simultaneously.''
