Taiwan-based LED wafer and chip maker Epistar is establishing a joint venture with China-based LED display maker Leyard Optoelectronic for producing mini/micro LED chips and modules in Wuxi, eastern China, with production to begin in second-half 2020, according to Epistar.
The JV has initial paid-in capital of CNY300 million (US$42.5 million), with Epistar's wholly owned subsidiaries Yenrich Technology and Episky (Xiamen) to together hold a 50% stake and Leyard the rest.
The JV will initially focus on assembling mini LED modules, with chips and packaged devices to be supplied from Taiwan, Epistar said. If demand is significant, the JV will undertake its own production of mini LEDs and/or packaged devices, Epistar noted.
