DJ Kinross Sees Gold Reserves Of 16 Mln Ounces For 2004
LONDON, Nov 04, 2004 (ODJ Select via COMTEX) --
(Dow Jones)--Kinross Gold Corp. (KGC) said Thursday that it expects to increase its gold reserves base to 16 million ounces at the end of 2004.
Speaking at a conference here, Chief Executive Robert Buchan said the company's 2005 target is 20 million ounces of reserves. At the end of 2003, the miner had gold reserves of 14.1 million ounces.
Kinross has recently faced market scrutiny on its future gold production. Gold producers not only have to replace the material they mine each year, but must also show the markets some future prospects.
Buchan described the forecast increase in reserves as moving in "the right direction, but certainly a long way to go."
According to the company's presentation, its Brazilian asset Gurupi and Buckhorn project in Washington will be key contributors to the reserves increase for 2004.
Kinross is one of the world's top-ten primary gold producers with approximately 1.7 million ounces of annual gold-equivalent production.
The company says it has varying interests in 13 mines on four continents. Approximately 50% of its production is in the U.S. and over two-thirds in North America.

Kinross Gold Corporation
Kinross reported an excellent second quarter of $0.02 a share versus a loss last year. In addition, Canada's third largest gold company will produce 1.7 million ounces from its twelve mines at a cash cost of $230 per ounce. Kinross has $200 million of cash with a working capital position of $270 million at the end of June. The company has recently acquired positions in Cumberland, Anatolia Minerals and White Knight giving it excellent exploration potential. Kinross expects to explore around key mines Fort Knox, Round Mountain and Kubaka. Kettle River will come on stream this year extending Kinross reserve life. Kinross is hedge free and is well levered to the gold price. Buy.
